Shift Manager

Overview

A shift manager is responsible for directing and managing the operation of a business during a specific time such as a day or night. They will delegate tasks to employees and ensure that workers are completing their job duties while adhering to shift goals. Shift managers also deal with any problems that arise throughout their shift and will inform the next shift manager about ongoing tasks.

What responsibilities will I have?

 

  • Provide leadership, expertise and direction during a shift
  • Ensure that work activities adhere to all safety standards and procedures
  • Delegate tasks so that daily production targets are met
  • Plan, direct, coordinate and execute daily activities based on a published schedule or directive
  • Ensure that quality control and non-conformance processes are adhered to
  • Help employees identify and overcome any obstacles that affect safety and efficient production
  • Effectively communicate and collaborate with other department heads
  • Make recommendations to the production manager on how to be more efficient
  • Communicate with the previous and upcoming shift manager about upcoming tasks
  • Submit order requests for materials needed on the shift
  • Ensure that accidents and incidents are thoroughly investigated
  • Bring issues to upper management as required
  • Analyze and resolve problems or assist employees in providing solutions
  • Ensure that employees are properly trained
  • Complete and maintain appropriate records, documents and reports
  • Fill-in for employees when needed
  • Resolve any problems that arise during a shift

 

What education and training is required?

The educational background required to become a shift manager will depend on the type of work activities you are managing. For example, an engineering or wind energy technology associate or bachelor’s degree would be recommended for a shift manager at a wind turbine manufacturing facility. Generally, shift managers are individuals who have been promoted from a position from a shift they are supervising.

To pursue a career as an Shift Manager:

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, business, computer skills, personal finance and mathematics.
