Location/Plant Manager or Superintendent

Overview

Location/plant managers or superintendents are responsible for seeing the daily operations of manufacturing and processing facilities, such as those that produce animal feed for livestock. They monitor production outcomes, quantity and quality of the products produced to ensure customer satisfaction and food safety compliance. Additionally, superintendents look to improve the efficiency of operations by developing tracking production and safety metrics.

What responsibilities will I have?

 

  • Engage and inspire teams through leadership
  • Monitor production outcomes, quantity and quality
  • Supervise and assist facility staff in daily activities
  • Oversee production operations assuring quality and adherence to specifications
  •  
  • Participate in continuous improvement efforts
  • Administer production budgets for specific departments and shifts
  • Ensure equipment is scheduled for preventative maintenance
  • Provide mentoring and support to staff
  • Plan, initiate and put plant improvement projects into operation
  • Perform business functions such as purchase requests and submitting invoices
  • Work directly with vendors and customers in the daily processes of the property
  • Manage the on-site administrative and cultural activities
  • Assist in the training and hiring of staff
  • Make recommendations on budget and staffing requirements
  • Coordinate work activities with other departments
  • Operate facilities in an efficient and safe manner
  • Ensure compliance with all environmental requirements

 

What education and training is required?

A bachelor's degree in agricultural business, engineering, food science, animal science, poultry science or a related field is needed. Some roles may also be obtainable with an associate degree. However, experience working in a manufacturing environment for multiple years is a requirement before taking on a managerial role.

To pursue a career as an Location/Plant Manager or Superintendent:

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, agricultural mechanics, algebra, business, accounting, statistics and personal finance.
