Overview

Trade managers are responsible for managing an organization’s trading operations and performing market research. They support the growth of their company by building a strong understanding of market issues and opportunities relevant to their industry. Trade managers also work to build strong relationships with key customers and suppliers and help coordinate the logistics of trading activities.

What responsibilities will I have?

• Perform market research and data analysis to support organizational initiatives
• Develop and implement trading strategies
• Generate market reports and presentations
• Coordinate trading activities with the organization
• Review and analyze market issues and trends
• Coordinate with key industry and government stakeholders on markets and policy
• Manage relationships with key customers and suppliers
• Take overall responsibility for coordinating the logistics of trading activities
• Manage all applicable international trade agreement programs, such as North American Free Trade Agreement
• Work to resolve any compliance violations or issues which occur
• File custom disclosures when necessary
• Stay on top of international market developments
• Ensure all suppliers meet vendor approval requirements
• Visit existing and potential customers and suppliers domestically and internationally
• Serve as primary point of contact for all customs-related audits and compliance initiatives
• Ensure that the organization is compliant during the export and import of goods and ensure they are compliance with government-imposed regulations
• Attend trade related fairs and other relevant shows

What education and training is required?

An associate or bachelor's degree in agribusiness, agricultural economics, international business, agricultural communications or marketing. A Master of Business Administration or other related degree is a plus.

To pursue a career as a Trade Manager :

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, mathematics, business, personal finance and a second language.

Where can I work?

Trade managers are typically employed by food production companies, wholesalers, commodity buyers and suppliers who have international customers or purchase international goods.
