A systems administrator is responsible for ensuring that computer software, operating systems, security tools and business applications are functioning correctly. They perform day-to-day maintenance and repairs including software and computer installations and upgrades. Additionally, they support the organization by providing technical support, automation, security maintenance and troubleshooting on computer systems.

A systems administrator typically has an associate or bachelor’s degree in computer science, information technology (IT), IT systems administration, IT operations or a related field.
