Mill Packer

Overview

A mill packer is responsible for packaging flour based on customer requirements, cost and quality at flour mills. They operate different industrial packaging equipment such as tote fillers which fill industrial sized tote bags and stretch wrap machines. Mill packers will also ensure that their workstations are kept clean and that there is always enough stock of packaging.

 

What responsibilities will I have?

  • Package flour based on customer requirements, cost and quality
  • Place packages on pallets and check that all pallets are in good condition prior to loading
  • Keep work area clean and organized
  • Responsible for overall quality of the packaged goods (E.g. ensure labels are legible)
  • Notify management or any issues which would impair packaging functions, changes in quality or efficiency of responsibility
  • Collect samples for quality control teams
  • Perform quality assurance for appearance and fill package weight
  • Adhere to all safety policies and procedures
  • Operate a tote filling and packing system and stretch wrap machine
  • Operate a pallet jack to move products and packaging material into and out of automatic case sorting equipment
  • Monitor inventory for packaging materials and report low levels when needed
  • Operate sealing and labelling machine
  • Responsible for ensuring food safety and compliance during the packing of products

 

What education and training is required?

A high school diploma is required to be a mill packer, but an associate degree will make a candidate more employable.

 

To pursue a career as a Mill Packer:

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, mathematics, chemistry, biology, family and consumer sciences.

 

Where can I work?

Mill packers are typically employed by flour mills, grain elevators, food production companies, animal nutrition companies, commodity traders and bioenergy companies.
