Overview
A director of procurement is responsible for the strategic procurement of the commodities, supplies and services used by an organization. They have the corporate responsibility to coordinate directly with the production, warehouse and transportation teams in order to maintain the appropriate level of inventory. Their role requires an expert knowledge of purchase goods and services that meet quality requirements and specifications.

What education and training is required?
A bachelor's degree in agricultural business, agricultural economics, supply chain management or a related business field are required to be a director of procurement. Some jobs may require a Master of Business Administration. Before becoming a director, a minimum of 10 years of experience in direct procurement, supply chain and/or manufacturing operations is recommended.
To pursue a career as an Director of Procurement:
The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, business, mathematics, statistics and personal finance.
Where can I work?
Directors of procurement typically work for companies that produce products in mass quantities. In agriculture, it may be determining how to get seed, chemicals, medicines, food items, parts, etc. through the supply chain to the customer.
