Director of Procurement

Overview

A director of procurement is responsible for the strategic procurement of the commodities, supplies and services used by an organization. They have the corporate responsibility to coordinate directly with the production, warehouse and transportation teams in order to maintain the appropriate level of inventory. Their role requires an expert knowledge of purchase goods and services that meet quality requirements and specifications.

What responsibilities will I have?

 

  • Provide leadership and direction to the purchasing department
  • Create and develop purchasing strategies and directions
  • Analyze current inventories and procurement opportunities
  • Develop and maintain excellent relationships with vendors
  • Monitor the performance of suppliers by assessing their ability to meet quality and delivery requirements
  • Set and enforce a budget for the purchasing department
  • Analyze and make recommendations to the senior management team
  • Develop a domestic and international alternative supplier base
  • Ensure the purchasing team purchases supplies from set criteria
  • Oversee and ensure best practices for procurement and inventory management
  • Identify vendor cost-saving opportunities and support strategic sourcing initiatives
  • Lead negotiations for suppliers and identify potential new suppliers
  • Oversee the baseline cost of supplies and monitor market changes
  • Facilitate solutions to any major inventory issues
  • Make final decisions on costing negotiations for new and existing products
  • Actively participate in talent cultivation by providing professional development, coaching and mentorship

 

What education and training is required?

A bachelor's degree in agricultural business, agricultural economics, supply chain management or a related business field are required to be a director of procurement. Some jobs may require a Master of Business Administration. Before becoming a director, a minimum of 10 years of experience in direct procurement, supply chain and/or manufacturing operations is recommended.

To pursue a career as an Director of Procurement:

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, business, mathematics, statistics and personal finance.

Where can I work?

Directors of procurement typically work for companies that produce products in mass quantities. In agriculture, it may be determining how to get seed, chemicals, medicines, food items, parts, etc. through the supply chain to the customer.
