Job Description:

Our flagship McCain Foods Farm of the Future (FoF) Canada is situated on 500 acres near the company’s hometown of Florenceville, New Brunswick. The Farm includes 355 acres of cultivated land owned by McCain, and an additional 145 acres rented on a long-term agreement. We produce potatoes and grains on a three-year crop rotation. We have now completed three full growing seasons and harvests at Farm of the Future Canada, embodying our commitment to regenerative agriculture and planet-friendly food. We have embarked on a new step of the Farm journey where we want to demonstrate that potatoes can be grown regeneratively and profitably.

 

The Farm Manager, Farm of the Future Canada is responsible for the planning, organization, supervision and administration of all activities related to the Farm of the Future. The Manager ensures the commercial production of regenerative potatoes and rotation crops, and provides management and leadership to keep FoF a state-of-the-art farm at the forefront of regenerative agriculture. The Manager innovates and pushes boundaries to implement operational and agronomy practices through cutting edge technologies for growing, monitoring crop development and crop production, all while increasing raw quality, productivity and achieving yearly budgeted targets. The Manager is responsible for managing the Farm team, disseminating knowledge and making FoF a differentiating asset for partnering growers, customers, public institutions, research organizations and strategic partners in the company’s collective journey towards regenerative agriculture.

 

 

Key focus areas: Safety, People Capabilities, Grower Relationships, Sustainability/Re-generative Ag. Practices, Soil Health Management, Drive Payable Yield, Machinery & Equipment, Precision Agriculture, Remote sensing, Variable rate Technology. 

 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following

  • Continue to build and enhance the strong safety culture at FoF
  • Define the farm crop and agronomy plan and oversee execution of farm and field operations
  • Reach 100% leading regenerative agriculture practices at FoF
  • Monitor and deliver measurable, continuous improvement of the FoF performance against each indicator of the McCain regenerative agriculture framework
  • Establish sustainable and profitable crop production on the Farm
  • Build team people capabilities through coaching and career development, set objectives and goals for team and communicate clear expectations
  • Execute and maintain 18-month operational budget/forecast. Is accountable for revenues including payable yields and grades, expenses and gross margin on the Farm
  • Execute and maintain 5-year Capital Equipment Expenditures in line with budget
  • Collaborate with the Global Agronomy and Research team to execute on-farm research trials, capture data and implement solutions to achieve greater environmental sustainability, low carbon footprint, optimum plant health and productivity
  • Engage our partnering McCain growers around innovative and regenerative practices at FoF; champion regenerative agriculture through measurable scientific results, outreach and knowledge transfer
  • Maintain and build a strong alliance with McCain, Academia and Industry Professionals
  • Attend meetings/training sessions to gain knowledge of innovative regenerative agricultural practices


 

Qualifications

  • BS degree in Agriculture or related field preferred
  • Knowledge and experience of crop production, agriculture sustainability challenges and agriculture machinery and technologies
  • Minimum 5 years of practical commercial experience in Agriculture / Farm operations
  • Track record of leading and executing innovative projects as a self-starter delivering measurable technical, operational and economic results
  • Experience in managing an operational team with a strong safety and performance culture, and good interpersonal skills
  • Knowledge of agriculture equipment and emerging agriculture technologies
  • Proven capacity to adapt, keep focus and thrive in a dynamic environment
  • Flexible work hours during certain seasons (planting & harvesting)

 

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Valid driver’s license required. Class 3 preferred
  • Agrologist license (Canada) within 3 years. Provincial pesticide applicators license an asset, if not already certified then certification must be obtained within 3 months.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may be exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee may be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions.  Employee will be required to perform duties in an agricultural setting to include potato fields and potato storages.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to use hands and fingers to operate a computer keyboard, mouse and telephone keyboard and talk or hear.

Requires visual acuity to focus on desktop and/or laptop computer screen.

Requires standing and sitting for prolonged periods of time, talking and listening.

Work demands may fluctuate seasonally related to farming cycles, especially during planting and harvesting.
