The Tooling Design Engineer is responsible for the design of reliable, accurate, cost effective, user-friendly welding, machining, and assembly fixtures through an advanced understanding of manufacturing processes and use of CAD software.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
- Design all levels of fixtures and tooling in CAD software and produce drawings and support documentation as needed.
- Work with manufacturing engineering and other tooling designers to propose, evaluate, and develop the best method of manufacturing of parts to be fixtured.
- Accurately estimate design and build times of custom tooling based off CAD models of the parts to be tooled in collaboration with engineering and custom fabrication.
- Set product quality and tolerance specifications for designs.
- Design and/or select hydraulic, power transmission, and structural components.
- Perform engineering design calculations pertinent to the design of tooling and fixtures.
- Fabricate or modify custom equipment, fixtures, and tooling for use in manufacturing.
- Introduce tooling and fixturing designs to custom fabrication and production and assist with training employees on its proper use.
- Manage major projects independently. Maintain an up-to-date written list of assigned tasks and communicate with engineering and manufacturing management to set priorities.
- Solicit input from individuals and teams on current and future manufacturing tooling and fixturing improvements.
- Complete related documentation, proposals, and written reports.
- Provide technical assistance to tooling builders during the production of tooling and fixturing.
- Keep abreast of new products, technologies, and competitive equipment in the industry and communicate information to Company personnel.
- Cost justify various tooling designs based on specific part and manufacturing needs.
Education and/or Experience -
- A bachelors degree in mechanical or manufacturing engineering and related equipment design experience is required.
- Knowledge and experience in the areas of machining, steel fabrication, welding, and 3D CAD software are essential.
- Pro Engineer/CREO experience is preferred.
