Job Summary

The Operator, Elevator and Seed Plant, is responsible for operating and maintaining the elevator and seed plant equipment, ensuring the efficient and safe handling of grain and seeds. This includes receiving, drying, storing, and shipping of grain, as well as processing and packaging of seeds. Additionally, the operator may be required to assist on the grain farm, operate equipment during peak seasons and support farm operations as required.

 

RESPONSIBILITIES

Operating Machinery: Operate, maintain, and monitor grain receiving and storage equipment such as seed cleaners, separators, graders, treaters, packaging equipment, and conveyor systems, augers, forklifts, and other farming equipment as required. Load and unload trucks, railcars, and shipping containers.
Quality Control: Inspect seeds for impurities, damage, moisture content, or contamination to ensure they meet quality standards. Monitor and regularly maintain processing equipment to ensure it functions correctly to ensure optimal performance. Perform accurate weighing and sampling of incoming grain.
Seed Treatment: Applies fungicides, insecticides, or coatings to seeds as required, following appropriate procedures and safety protocols.
Inventory Management: Maintains accurate records of seed inventory, including quantities received, processed, and shipped. Monitor stock levels and reorder supplies as needed.
Safety and Compliance: Adhere to safety protocols and regulatory requirements to ensure a safe working environment and compliance with relevant laws and regulations.
Troubleshooting: Identify and resolve issues with equipment or processes to minimize downtime and maintain productivity.
Teamwork: Work closely with other colleagues to coordinate activities and achieve production goals.
Cleaning and Maintenance: Clean and maintain processing equipment and work areas to ensure cleanliness and prevent contamination.
Documentation: Maintain accurate records of production activities, including processing times, quantities processed, and any treatments applied.
Training: Train new employees or students on operating procedures, safety protocols, and quality standards.
Continuous Improvement: Identify opportunities for process improvements and participate in initiatives to enhance efficiency, quality, and safety.
Customer Service: Communicate with customers regarding order specifications, delivery schedules, and any special requirements.

 

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Previous experience operating grain handling or seed processing equipment is preferred.
  • Experience operating farm equipment is desirable.


SKILLS AND KNOWLEDGE

  • Knowledge of elevator and seed plant operations, including grain receiving, storage, drying, and shipping processes is preferred but not required. 
  • Familiarity with equipment maintenance and troubleshooting.
  • Commitment to safety and adherence to safety regulations and protocols.
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to perform accurate measurements and calculations.
  • Basic computer skills for data entry and equipment monitoring.
  • Ability to work independently and follow standard operating procedures.
  • Excellent communication and teamwork skills.
  • Flexible and reliable.

 

REQUIREMENTS FOR THE POSITION

  • Physical fitness and ability to lift heavy objects and work in various weather conditions.
  • Willingness to assist on the grain farm during peak seasons.
  • Must be willing to learn and operate other farming equipment as required.
  • Valid Driver’s License and ability to provide a satisfactory driver’s abstract.
  • Flexibility to work long hours and weekends during peak season.
  • Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditions and perform physically demanding tasks.
