The Research Assistant - Agronomy Specialist will work under the direction of the Agronomy Lead and Crop Health Research Program to provide agronomic support to all groups within the Woodland, CA Research Station. The Assistant will be responsible for various tasks while working across functions to achieve successful research trials from planting, through harvest and quality data in all crops.
What You'll Do:
Works with team members to maintain collaborative contacts between Station Ops lead, Agronomy Lead, scientists, agronomists, and contracted staff to ensure research goals are met to expectations.
Will be an integrated member of the Woodland, CA team, participate in safety committees, audits, center-wide safety programs, and comply with all center and company policies.
Execute field trial operations including but not limited to field preparation, irrigation, planting/transplanting, field scouting, pesticide applications, harvest and hand labor as needed.
Work independently or collaboratively within a team structured environment of Research Scientists, Assistants and Operations personnel.
Work in outdoor environment with exposure to the environmental extremes of the Sacramento Valley.
Identify improvements in procedures and protocols within allotted time constraints.
Identify appropriate and efficient uses of station research project resources.
Assist in the logistics of agronomic equipment and employees to complete research tasks in a timely manner.
Make daily decisions associated with conducting experiments that reflect Company Policies.
Decide priority of work activities to meet assigned deadlines, balancing all assigned projects.
Safely handle and apply various types of agricultural pesticides.
Manage field data.
Manage greenhouse operations and climate controls.
Other duties and cross-training in other aspects of row and permanent crop agriculture, agricultural research, station and facility support, and maintenance as needed.
What Skills You Need:
Associate's degree with 3-5 years of related experience or Bachelor's degree with 2 years of related experience.
Preferable familiarity with agricultural equipment (tractors, planters, cultivators, combines, etc.) and on-farm usage.
Excellent verbal, written communication skills, organizational skills and computer skills/experience.
Excellent personal interaction skills and ability to work as a team member with a diverse group of people.
Spanish speaking skills are beneficial but not required.
Must be capable of doing physical lifting (up to 50lbs).
Must have a clean driving record.
Experience with MS Office software and other data management software.
Periods of extended work hours and overnight travel during planting and harvest may be required.
Preferably have a familiarity with row crops (including but, not limited to tomatoes, leafy greens, peppers, melons, corn and brassica vegetables) and permanent crops (vines and trees) and farm equipment.
