As a Phenotyping Specialist, you will be a key contributor for a variety of activities at the Garden City, KS research center and will contribute to the join success of a multi-crop focused team committed to developing and characterizing new hybrids and varieties for corn, sorghum, soybeans and hard red winter wheat.  The ideal candidate will have basic knowledge of agronomy and farm equipment, applicable knowledge of crop diseases, and interest and/or experience in UAV operation.  This position will also assist with seed organization and preparation ahead of planting operations for all crops, as well as local activities supporting the corn breeding project.  

What You'll Do:

  • Collaborate on research seed handling activities, including seed treating, shipping, sorting, inventory, and planting container preparation for all crops.
  • Lead, train and supervise seasonal workers while ensuring work is performed in a safe and efficient manner. 
  • Assist in maintaining inventory of nursery equipment and supplies necessary for the completion of breeding goals by the station project.
  • Actively lead and supervise pollination crews to help maintain seed purity and ensure adherence to quality standards.
  • Play a key role in fall harvest crews by operating a combine to assist with the efficient harvest of yield test plots.
  • Prioritize activities to meet assigned seed shipping deadlines, balancing all assigned projects.
  • Serve as a local drone pilot to collect phenotyping data for all crops.

What Skills You Need:

  • A minimum of a Bachelor's degree in an agriculture-related field.
  • Demonstrated excellent communication/personal interaction skills to foster teamwork, enhance a positive work environment
  • Effectively develop strong internal and external working relationships with a diverse group of people, able to influence and direct a team.
  • Proactive and willing to supervise seasonal workers.
  • Strong experience and skills with computers and data management to collect, evaluate and distribute data. 
  • Ability to work extended hours at peak times of the year.  Travel during harvest will be required with limited overnight stays throughout the fall.
  • Must be capable of lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Must be capable of working in varying ergonomic and environmental conditions for extended periods of time (indoor or outdoor settings and hot, cold, wet or dry conditions).

What Makes You Stand Out:

  • Working knowledge of production agriculture with emphasis on corn production.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Research Plot/Data Collection Exposure.
  • Basic Maintenance Experience.
  • Knowledge of field equipment and farming techniques.
  • Previous training on field scouting.

This position is required to work onsite 5 days a week.
