The Screening and Bioprocess (S&B) group is seeking a Fermentation Development Technician for the Fermentation Development Laboratory (FDL). Under the general direction of the FDL leader, the incumbent supports the daily operation of bioreactors to improve fermentation outcomes.
What You'll Do:
- Develop a comprehensive understanding of equipment operation while consistently adhering to the highest level of safe operating discipline
- Operate and maintain bioreactors to support the study and improvement of fermentation processes, including the addition of medium components, sterilization, daily sampling, cleaning, and routine maintenance
- Take ownership of scheduled and unscheduled repairs and maintenance of lab equipment and utilities, demonstrating strong mechanical aptitude
- Perform sample analysis using instruments such as viscometers, centrifuges, spectrophotometers, laboratory analyzers, and pH meters
- Participate in weekend and off-hour fermentation monitoring and sampling, including periodic "call-ins"
- Work on multiple projects in a highly collaborative environment
- Develop an understanding of fermentation process development requirements
- Order laboratory consumables and handle the receipt and stocking of materials and supplies
- Schedule and manage work tasks in alignment with the overall team plan of work and project goals
- Demonstrate proficiency in basic computer skills, including MS Office platforms such as Excel, Word, and PowerPoint
- Identify opportunities to improve workflows or experimental designs
- Recognize when results deviate from expectations
- Adhere to documentation standards and contribute to writing technology reports
What Skills You Need:
- Trade school certification, associates or bachelor's degree in biological sciences, engineering or related discipline is required
- Mechanical aptitude including, but not limited to electrical maintenance, steam systems, equipment maintenance and engineering controls is desired.
- Strong adherence to safety culture at Corteva is required
- Ability to work in diverse teams and excellent interpersonal skills is required
- Flexibility to perform work after hours or on weekends as needed is required
- Must be willing to work in a process environment which requires frequent (50% of workday) bending, reaching, and lifting as well as working with steam and pressurized equipment
- A high level of independence and initiative is required
- Basic computer skills (Microsoft Office) are required
- Hands on experience with pressurized bioreactors is desired
- Experience with programmable logic controller (PLC) or human-machine interface (HMI) programming for closed loop control systems is an asset
