Corteva Agriscience has an exciting opportunity for a Data Scientist. The successful candidate will join a strong, globally distributed Data Science team that develops and applies innovative methods and tools to deliver insights for Corteva R&D. The preferred location for this position is Indianapolis, IN; remote candidates will also be considered on a case-by-case basis. The candidate must have experience and fundamental knowledge in reinforcement learning, chemical manufacturing unit operations and processes, and programming skills to develop and deliver novel solutions in an industry setting.
What You'll Do:
- Partner with R&D scientists to develop rigorous artificial intelligence solutions aligned to project needs.
- Collaborate with cross-functional and inter-disciplinary teams for problem solving, addressing complex analysis and modeling questions and interpreting results.
- Design and implement scalable analysis pipelines for processing complex models.
- Effectively explain research methodology and analyses as they related to research outcomes.
- Communicate insights derived from complex analyses into simple conclusions that empower leadership to drive action; communicate results in internal and external forums; and contribute to scientific articles as needed.

- Stay abreast of emerging technologies in reinforcement learning, artificial intelligence, and agriculture tech and advocate for their adoption where beneficial.

What Skills You Need:
- M.S. + 3 years' experience or Ph.D. in Applied Statistics, Artificial Intelligence, Computer Science, Data Analysis, Data Science, Engineering (e.g., Chemical, Industrial, Mechanical), Machine Learning, Physics, or related highly quantitative fields. Additional years of experience are preferred but not required.
- Strong expertise in Python and/or R programming languages and their application to data wrangling, machine learning (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), and data visualization.
- Strong experience and fundamental understanding of model-free reinforcement learning methods.
- Expertise in modeling and fundamental understanding of chemical manufacturing processes including unit operations, chemical kinetics, and chemical thermodynamics.
- Solid understanding of model training, testing, and validation; model diagnostics; variable selection; and dimensionality reduction.
- Experience in model development and deployment (e.g., CI/CD pipelines; Git; MLflow; containerization using tools such as docker, podman, or Kubernetes).
- Fundamental understanding of standard machine learning techniques (e.g., neural networks, random forest, XGBoost, SVMs, K-means).
- Ability to work both independently and within a multidisciplinary team environment to provide innovative solutions.
- Ability to successfully collaborate with colleagues from diverse technical backgrounds which includes excellent communication, interpersonal, verbal, and written skills.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills, flexibility, and willingness to learn.
What Makes You Stand Out:
- Experience with dynamic chemical process simulation and modeling software (e.g., gPROMS, Aspen, CHEMCAD).
- Familiarity with model-based reinforcement learning or partially-observed Markov processes
- Familiarity with active learning.
- Familiarity with data science in Agriculture.
- Experience consulting on scientific projects or working within a scientific team.
