Overview

An originator is responsible for procuring grain from producers, growers and grain elevators. They maintain and grow business relationships by providing strong, credible and trustworthy services for producers. Additionally, originators will negotiate contracts, write purchasing contracts and coordinate the logistics and movement of grains.

What responsibilities will I have?

• Plan, develop and implement grain purchasing strategies and tactics
• Develop and maintain relationships directly with farmers and producers
• Perform market analysis to assess market competition
• Execute purchasing contracts with accurate documentation
• Interpret industry reports and understand changes and trends
• Attend relevant trade shows by arranging a booth when applicable
• Understand grain weighing and grading procedures
• Travel to county elevators and farm producers to meet with customers
• Provide producers updates on market trends, quotes and the agricultural business overall
• Plan, develop and implement complex purchasing strategies and tactics
• Provide excellent customer service and work well with suppliers
• Work with internal departments such as accounting and merchandisers to exchange information as needed
• Recommend risk management strategies and products
• Maintain account and sales call records, including customer profiles
• Coordinate logistics and the movement of grains
• Ensure all grain purchases comply with state and federal regulations

What education and training is required?

An associate degree or higher in agricultural business, agricultural marketing or a related agricultural field such as finance or accounting.

To pursue a career as an Originator:

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, biology, business, computer skills and mathematics.

Where can I work?

Originators are typically employed by grain elevators, food production companies, animal nutrition companies, commodity traders and bioenergy companies.
