Grain Grader

Overview

A grain grader is responsible for grading a variety of grain types such as wheat, oil seeds and pulses as they are delivered to grain elevators. They will perform laboratory tests such as moisture and protein testing and grade grains based on government regulations. Grain graders provide technical assistance to outside inspectors and grain elevator staff on grade issues.

 

What responsibilities will I have?

  • Collect, manage and study genomic data using computer software
  • Conduct in-dept analysis of genomic profiles
  • Crossbreed animals and crops to obtain new combinations of desirable characteristics
  • Use genomics data to identify desirable traits
  • Receive and prepare samples for analysis
  • Collaborate with plant breeders to genotype samples at different stages of breeding
  • Plan and execute experiments in research laboratories
  • Identify and develop software tools for efficient data collection and for mining biological data
  • Provide recommendations for breeders and farmers based on research collected
  • Transform genomics data into information that can be used for the creation of higher yielding crops and pest control solutions
  • Communicate results in the form of presentations and technical reports
  • Maintain a safe and well-organized laboratory work area
  • Perform statistical analysis, computer programming and computer modelling
  • Ensure compliance with all existing safety standards
  • Participate in research and development and translate any new techniques
  • Evaluate potential risks of alt research activities
  • Provide insight to government agencies for policy development

 

What education and training is required?

A high school diploma is required, but 2-3 years related experience in a manufacturing environment is preferred.

 

To pursue a career as a Grain Grader :

The following high school courses are recommended: agricultural education, plant science, mathematics, business and computer skills.

 

Where can I work?

Grain graders are typically employed by grain elevators, food production companies, animal nutrition companies, commodity traders and bioenergy companies.
