Seed Technician (Cranbrook, BC)

This opportunity is an outdoor field-based role that assists the pre-commercial canola production team in a timely and efficient manner, while meeting all quality standards.

 

This is a permanent position based out of Cranbrook, Bristish Columbia.

 

What you will do:

  • Clean down equipment following appropriate safety and compliance standards.
  • Operate machinery / equipment to ensure that seed production processes occur safely, effectively, and with quality in alignment with general procedures of the site
  • Support local team in all functions of seed production including spring tillage and soil preparation, crop planting, cultivation, irrigation, pesticide application, scouting, rouging, male plant line removal, swathing and harvest
  • Manage seed inventory including operation of inventory database, seed sampling, shipping, storage, and discards
  • Work in an indoor growth room setting bagging plants, manually pollinating, harvesting, and inventorying
  • Assist with developing procedures for field and growth room production
  • Assist with monitoring previous year’s seed production fields and controlling volunteer canola plants as directed
  • Assist in the development and implementation of farm safety and stewardship procedures
  • Ensure timely entries for field data collection and production records
  • Provide support to field production of other seed crops (i.e. soybean, wheat, vegetable seeds, FDN canola seed) and other projects as needed
  • Adhere to LOTO when service is needed for maintenance
  • Utilize Focused Improvement (e.g., 5WHYs) techniques to initiate process and standard work improvements
  • Provide coaching and training to seasonal workforce, area trainees and peers supporting achievement and personal development
  • Support areas across sites in driving the adoption of continuous improvement practices and programs (5S, Lean, Six Sigma) conducive to an organized and clean work environment
  • Ensure upstream activities (e.g., field inspection, grower contract) are handled within company standards and business requirements
  • Cultivate partnership with key business partners to plant / field operations (e.g., grower network)
  • Maintain key process documentation (operating, start up and shut down procedures; standard work; process flow and instrumentation diagrams; etc.)
  • Demonstrate knowledge of and adherence to Bayer s Health, Safety, Environment (HSE) and Quality Assurance/Quality Control (QA/QC) standards (e.g. general shop floor/machine safety and operating procedures)
  • Ensure that QMS/CSGA procedures and standards, Bayer Quality Policy, and stewardship procedures are followed. Assist in revision of procedures
  • Comply with internal procedures and support compliance with legal requirements applicable to area activities
  • Participate in and lead meetings as needed; articulating shift objectives and allocating resources accordingly across all active production areas
  • Support and maintain metrics and relevant information on current Visual Management boards to drive teamwork and facilitate shift change over

Who you are:

  • High School Diploma
  • Basic knowledge of IT (Internet, Excel, PowerPoint, Word, or facilities with systems)
  • Valid Driver’s License. In order to be eligible to drive a company car, your driving record must meet guidelines based on the company‘s Risk Screening for Hiring Drivers MVR will be reviewed as part of pre-employment screening
  • Must be able to lift, push, and pull 50 pounds regularly
  • Must have availability to meet overtime demands, including occasional work on weekends and holidays from time to time
  • Strong decision making and problem-solving skills 
  • Comfortable with change, with ability to adjust quickly to changing conditions and work demands

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Certification in mangement systems or continuous improvement practices
  • Previous experience with SAP, Spotfire, Tablo, or Microsoft PowerBI
  • Previous experience in seed production and/or processing
  • Experience with hauling trailers and loading and unloading equipment is preferred but not required
  • Excellent computer skills and the ability to work in all Microsoft Office programs plus navigate company databases
  • Have a BC agriculture pesticide applicators license or ability to obtain
  • 5+ years of agricultural/ Canola seed production experience or other relevant industry experience is preferred
  • Bilingual Spanish/English
  • Understand digital farming techniques using GPS, data collection and record keeping

This posting complies with the British Columbia Pay Transparency Act.  The salary range for this role is between $44,800 - $114,000.
