Who We Are:
The Organic Produce Association (OPA) is the only association solely representing the organic fruit and vegetable industry. The organization consists of members in the organic produce industry who focus on science-based policymaking and the ability to be innovative while respecting the tradition of organics and the integrity of the USDA Organic Seal.
Position Overview:
OPA is seeking a Director of Recruitment and Communications to provide strategic leadership for the Association’s efforts to expand its membership and communications strategy. The Director will be a hands-on leader with a strong understanding of the industry, including expertise and relationships with key participants of the organic produce value chain. As OPA continues to advance the interests of the organic produce sector, the group’s priority is to expand its membership with other leaders in the space.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Essential Job Functions:
- Develop and implement a comprehensive and targeted recruitment program designed to attract industry participants, from organic input providers and suppliers to organic produce growers to retailers.
- Develop recruitment targets and goals for enrolling new members reflective of the entire organic produce value and supply chain.
- Work in close collaboration with the OPA Board and federal lobbying consultants to amplify OPA’s advocacy efforts among potential new members.
- Oversee development of outreach, recruitment, and communication materials.
- Develop and implement a communications strategy involving both traditional and nontraditional media sources to raise the profile of OPA both inside and outside of Washington, D.C.
- Develop, facilitate and maintain professional relationships with companies and organizations throughout the organic produce value chain.
- Identify and participate in industry events and conferences on behalf of OPA.
- Potential travel 2-3 times per year, which could include evening and weekend work.
Qualifications:
Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree preferred
Experience:
- Minimum of 5 years of experience in the organic produce industry, with experience in recruitment and communications preferred.
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:
- Motivated self-starter who can work without significant oversight.
- Familiarity with general issues facing the organic industry.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with diverse constituencies in the organic produce industry including with NOP, NOSB, and key industry groups
- Demonstrated communications and managerial skills including experience with recruitment and marketing.
- Must have demonstrated public relations skills and the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Ability to occasionally travel and work non-standard hours.
