JOB TITLE: Department Head (Breeding)

  SUPERVISOR: Farm Manager
    
  DESCRIPTION: Department Head will assign duties to Animal Production Specialists and are responsible for the necessary animal husbandry for the livestock and maintenance of their departments.
    
  ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (Duties and Responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following.):
       - Assign duties to Animal Production Specialists
- Monitor climate controllers within the department ensuring that livestock are in the proper climate.
- Use hand held computer to input information pertain to the livestock within the department.
- Maintain accurate record keeping       - Animal movement form for internal movement
- Animal treatment forms
- Death loss form
- Weekly inventory report
 
- Monitor conception rate of the livestock.
- Monitor farrowing rates of the livestock.
- Ensure proper retention of breeding females.
- Make keep/cull decisions based on Index.
- Move animals within the facility and maintain flow throughout the facility.
- Ensure that animals have feed and water.
- Adjust feeders for optimum performance of livestock within the department.
- Feed animals, by using the automatic feeding system and/or manually feed the livestock.
- Examine animals to detect illness or injuries.
- Conduct estrus detection of female pigs to accurately identify heat cycles.
- Artificially inseminate female pigs via PCAI.
- Vaccinate animals by placing vaccine in drinking water, feed or using syringes and hypodermic needles.
- Open to assisting other departments within the farm to ensure all tasks are completed each day.
- Process piglets if needed:       - Surgically remove testes to castrate.
- Surgically remove tails.
- Clips identifying notches or symbols on animals, attaches tags to the ear, and/or tattoos animals.
 
- Maintain proper hygiene in and around faculties       - Thoroughly washes rooms using portable high pressure hot /or cold washers.
- Scrapes aisles behind pigs to remove excess fecal matter
- Removes all carcasses and/or afterbirth.
 
- Conduct minor repairs equipment, buildings, crates, and pens.
- Euthanize animals when necessary.
  SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
       - Day to day supervision of Animal Production Specialist
  QUALIFICATIONS:
       - Six months experience as Animal Production Specialist within a breeding department
  EDUCATIONS AND/OR EXPERIENCE:
        
  LANGUAGE SKILLS:
        
  MATHEMATICAL SKILLS:
        
  REASONING ABILITY:
       - Identify and Prioritize work to be within the department
- Assign tasks to Animal Production Specialists
- Must be able to follow instructions
 
    CERITFICATES, LICENSES, AND REGISTRAITONS:
         
    WORK ENVIRONMENT:
    The temperature inside the facility will vary depending on the weather. Employees will come into contact with feed dust and the body fluids of animals that will include, but not limited to blood, saliva, mucus, urine, fecal mater, etc.
