At

of farmers. We are currently seeking a Breeding Project Lead (BPL) for the East
Market located in Downers Grove, Illinois. The BPL will be focused on implementing
strategies that aid in the development of commercially successful lines and
hybrids and ensures all activities act to enhance genetic gain and the
long-term success of the breeding program.
They will contribute to the development of inbred lines and hybrid
varieties of corn (103-117+ RM) that meet the performance targets set by the
East Market Segment with input from the Product Placement Scientists and the
business unit. The BPL also participates in nursery and hybrid testing related
activities and the takes ownership of assigned areas in the breeding program.


Accountabilities
  • Develop
    awareness of market needs for commercial products throughout East Market
    Segment area. Interactions with Product Placement Scientist colleagues and
    Sales/Commercial unit personnel to anticipate product performance gaps and
    contribute to a research plan to address these gaps
  • Using
    hybrid prediction tools, generate lists of new hybrid combinations for yield
    trial evaluations.
  • Assist
    with the writing of summer and winter nursery and yield trial experiments
  • Provide
    meaningful input on hybrid advancement decisions. Work with Market Segment team
    to ensure appropriate selection criteria and target product profiles are being
    applied
  • Generate
    reports/tables/charts to highlight to other functions and management how
    product performance is measured over time or in comparison to check hybrids in
    a current growing season
  • Implement
    new breeding techniques, being familiar with the advantages/limitations they
    might provide. Acquire a basic understanding of underlying theory
  • Implement
    new field designs to improve data quality
  • Implement
    marker breeding techniques and GWS strategies to improve breeding potential of
    early generation lines and selection of F1 breeding projects for doubled
    haploid induction


Skills:

  • PhD
    with 2 years in plant breeding preferred in either a commercial or academic
    setting
  • In-depth
    knowledge of plant breeding, genetics, statistics and field design, plant
    biology and marker breeding techniques including genome wide selection GWS
  • Background in two or more of the following areas:
    plant breeding, genetics, statistics, plant biology/pathology/botany, marker
    assisted breeding/GWS
  • Project management and budgeting experience in a
    team-oriented atmosphere
  • Regional travel within the United States required,
    especially during harvest period. Occasional international travel to winter
    nursery locations and in support of global germplasm exchange is possible
  • Individual must be authorized to work
    in the United States for Syngenta without work authorization sponsorship now or
    in the future
  • Visa sponsorship is not available for
    this position
