About this Job:
This position is for a plant breeder with the leadership and technical capacity to fulfill the breeding responsibilities of an blocky sweet pepper breeding program
The breeding project lead is responsible for designing and executing breeding or technology projects that result in the improvement and innovation of Syngenta's pepper portfolio within the framework of product profile specifications
This role requires an understanding of molecular marker technology and the use of the most effective breeding methods that take advantage of the latest techology tools to accelerate progress and the development of successful commercial varieties
The breeding project lead will create and deliver products and traits required for successful production of blocky sweet pepper in the major growing regions in California
The breeding project lead will work together with a team of scientists to execute projects using project management
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
Responsible for the budgetary and managerial aspects of the sweet pepper blocky dry breeding program for California
Plan and control of project resource demand in portfolio.
Secure efficient facility support for projects
May supervise and direct breeding trial specialist and breeding project assistants, not to exceed 3 reports depending on experience
Supervise and direct 3rd party field staff as needed
Set annual performance management goals and objectives
Complete periodical and year end reviews
Organize, implement, and manage trials using proprietary software
Organize prototype testing in the market with preferred environment for the traits
Organize and manage field and greenhouse trial allocations accurately with site management
Ensure and deliver genetically pure parental lines for introduction and production of new products
Scout for new technologies/opportunities/germplasm
Implement and apply new supporting technology in the breeding program
Assist in the development of intellectual property
Education & Experience:
M.S. or PhD. in plant science, with emphasis on breeding and genetics.
Knowledge of phytopathology, plant physiology, genetics, statistics, cell biology, and molecular markers
Project management knowledge
Computer skills with knowledge of database and software applications
Additional Knowledge, Skills, Traits & Abilities:
Frequent domestic and occasional international travel expected
Team approach and culture required
Ability to work under adverse environmental conditions
Good project planning
Good communicator internally and externally with team, upper management, customers, and scientific community.
Good knowledge of plant breeding principles and genetics
Good knowledge of crop management
Good sense of economics of processes and products
Both independent and team player
Ability to assess and resolve conflict
Ability to handle pressure and retain composure
Ability to speak and write English/ Spanish speaker desired but not required
