The Freight Merchandiser will have the skills to manage the freight positions in the Eastern Feed Co-Products Trade Units. This person is experienced in freight origination, and logistics execution. This role has responsibility to interpret the freight market and use their understanding of arbitrage to generate additional revenue for the business unit. They are responsible for providing optimal transportation solutions by evaluating freight rates and services from various freight partners. The Merchandiser will lead the freight execution throughout the supply chain by staying in daily contact with the internal stakeholders, suppliers, warehouses, freight providers, and other service providers in the supply chain. A Merchant builds deep customer relationships with both external and internal partners.

Market Analytics:
• Assess transportation market trends, intermodal freight capabilities and other external factors that can affect shipment execution and relay market intel to appropriate stakeholders. Review industry best practices and benchmarks and apply where relevant to Scoular.
• Assure that the trade unit is in compliance with all risk management policies.
• Manage a subset of the overall position for the business.
• Have the knowledge necessary to make commodity offers to customers at the direction of commodity merchandising team.
• Ability to manage the freight required to execute a diverse portfolio of ingredients necessary to service the customer.

• Responsible for auditing all origin and destination demurrage and detention claims, taking the lead to acquire all necessary information to convey to Merchandisers and Merchandising Assistants.
• Focus on building long term strategic truck, rail and barge freight partnership that increase the freight capacity of the business unit.


Customer Relationship Building:
• Recruit customers and business that support the business unit’s business strategy.
• Develop and maintain the extensive and varied business relationships in the marketplace.
• Build effective, on-going interaction with both current and potential customers.
• Act as a front line negotiator for handling freight execution and delivery conflicts.
• Responsible for customer experience to ensure Scoular delivers a favorable customer experience (supplier, end user, carrier).


P&L Planning & Management:
• Manage the P&L for the assigned subset of the business.
• Review Freight Variance report weekly.
• Accountable to maintain position limits, credit limits and in store inventories as defined by division leadership and trade finance.
• Create forecasts to inform the Lead Merchandiser/Trade Unit Manager.


People Development/Training:
• Create/drive collaboration within the division and company.
• Work with Lead and Senior Merchants to better understand the commodity flows and trading opportunities.



• 2+ years merchandising, logistics, or relevant business experience.
• College degree in business related field or equivalent experience.
• Proven critical thinking skills and ability to drive strategy forward.
• Demonstrated exceptional customer service skills and relationship building capability.
• Proven ability to perform in a fast-paced environment.
• Highly skilled in problem solving techniques.
• Must poses strong communication and problem-solving skills.
• General understanding of ingredient/grain markets, commodity flows and logistics.
• Knowledge of the agricultural industry’s trading standards and procedures.
• Ability to travel, as needed.


• Active involvement in industry association groups.
• Demonstrated leadership skills.
