Turkey Farmers of Canada (TFC) is a national regulatory body representing Canada’s 510+ turkey farmers. Created in 1974 under the Federal Farm Products Agencies Act, as the Canadian Turkey Marketing Agency, it oversees the supply management system for turkey, understanding issues, encouraging cooperation throughout the turkey industry, and promoting the consumption of turkey meat in Canada. Guided by Section 21a) of the Farm Products Marketing Agencies Act, the Agency is “to promote a strong, efficient and competitive production and marketing industry for the regulated product…”. Working cooperatively, the TFC and its Board set national turkey production levels in response to demand activity, market forecasts, import expectations and competing meat sets, to ensure that consumers have access to a secure supply of high-quality Canadian turkey products and also ensure that farmers earn a fair return on their investments.
Due to changing demographics and consumption patterns, the turkey industry in Canada is at a significant inflection point. Facing declining consumption, industry consolidation, and generational transition among producers, Turkey Farmers of Canada seeks a forward-thinking, dynamic, and strategic Executive Director to guide the organization through a time of transformation.
Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director will collaborate with stakeholders and champion the values and benefits of supply management while navigating the shifting dynamics between a shrinking number of large processors and an evolving base of growers. They will be a unifying voice across the sector, building trust, facilitating dialogue, and working closely with stakeholders to reinvigorate and grow the Canadian turkey industry.
The ideal candidate is a strategic and collaborative leader with a deep appreciation for Canadian agriculture and a strong commitment to the principles of supply management. Ideally, they bring experience from the agriculture, agri-food, or broader regulated sectors, and have demonstrated the ability to navigate complex, multi-stakeholder environments with diplomacy and integrity. Curious and inquisitive by nature, they are skilled at listening, synthesizing diverse perspectives, and shaping them into practical and actionable strategies that stakeholders can align behind. This individual is a relationship builder and consensus-seeker who thrives on engaging directly with members, from first-generation farmers to multinational processors. They possess the presence and credibility to represent the industry and the adaptability to effectively lead through a time of transformation. The ability to represent TFC effectively in Canada’s official languages – English and French – would be considered an asset.
