The Mine Operations Superintendent will report to the Assistant General Manager
What you will do:
  • The Mine Operations Superintendent is responsible for managing the underground mine production and construction activities while integrating engineering, planning and operational components to meet or exceed production targets in full compliance with safety, health, and environment standards & practices, budget and labor parameters.  Activities will include production coordination, technology, operations planning, and performance management
  • Production Coordination:
    • Coordinate the activities of the underground operations with those of the maintenance department to minimize the occurrence of unscheduled downtime and to ensure access to equipment during planned maintenance work
    • Communicate with the Assistant General Manager all relevant information concerning mine production activities, plans, manpower issues, safety and ground control
    • Hire and train General Foremen, Mine Captains, and First Line Production and Construction Supervisors
    • Manage and track costs on a daily, weekly and monthly basis
    • Administer safety programs
    • Perform required compliance checks, key procedure audits, area inspections, and job observations 
    • Conduct dispatch, toolbox, and safety meetings
    • Train new personnel and complete follow-up assessments, as well as keep experienced personnel informed as to the most efficient methods of performing their assignments
    • Ensure that safe work habits are enforced and instruct safe methods of doing work
    • Effectively meld the mine operations group with the mine engineering group, encouraging co-operation towards the prime goal of mine productivity
    • Ensure physical resources (equipment and materials), financial resources (capital) and human resources (people and labour harmony) are available to facilitate achievement of a safe and productive environment without sacrificing cost control, continuity of equipment and development of mine personnel
    • Maintain high department standards relating to health, safety, personnel relations and environmental conditions
    • Contribute to the development of short- and long-range plans by effectively interfacing with peers and company management
    • Ensure that focus on overall operations is applied not only vertically but horizontally as well
    • Regularly communicate to Assistant General Manager all relevant information concerning mine production activities, mine plans, productivity results and safety concerns
    • Recommend to Assistant General Manager on promotion of employees within the department. Advise other management personnel as to the abilities, qualifications and potential of employees who could be considered for positions outside the department
    • Keep all department personnel informed regarding abnormal conditions or problems in the mine
    Technology:
    • Upgrade the mine operations department in all areas due to changes and technological advancements in Mine Engineering and Mine Operations to improve operations efficiencies
    • Assist in technical training programs and implementation of approved safety practices to achieve an efficient and safe operation
    • Recommend the alteration or modification to existing systems, provides technical advice to personnel for improving maintenance and operating efficiency
    Operations Planning:
      Contribute to the development of short, medium and long-range plans with short term plans focusing on borer sequencing and utilizationScheduling equipment and service providersBuild on budget and adjust the plan and methods as the work proceeds to improve productivityDevelop detailed work plans in conjunction with engineers
    Performance Management:
      Establish accurate work standards, evaluation and appraisal systemsEstablish general and specific employee training programs to obtain top work performance from all operations employeesTrain all personnel on new concepts, systems and equipment as requiredReview and evaluate the performance of all mine operations personnelCoach and mentor General Foremen and other staff for strong leadership developmentGuide and counsel employees relative to necessary performance improvementsAdminister disciplinary action in appropriate casesEnsure open two-way communication with direct reports is established and maintainedEnsure employees know what is expected of them and how their performance is being judged Keep employees informed of matters affecting their work, listening to employees, and advising on matters relating to the jobParticipate in all company off site employee activities in support of department employees (i.e. Fire Fighters’ Rodeo, Provincial Emergency Response Competition, Service and Safety Awards.)Supervise personnel within the area of responsibility to ensure that safe and productive work is performedAssign/schedule work and performs regular follow-up on work activities so crew personnel are working in an efficient and effective manner
What you will bring:
  • Relevant Degree in Mine Engineering or related discipline
  • Minimum 10 years of related progressively-responsible senior mine management experience
  • Good technical knowledge of mining, an understanding of mining operations as a whole, and be up to date on technological advancements in this area
