The Director, Business Improvement & Development, N&P will report to the Senior Director, Business Improvement & Development , N&P and lead a team of three.
Nutrien's Nitrogen & Phosphate (N&P) Business Improvement and Development group is a team with a diverse range of skills and experience working collaboratively with groups throughout Nutrien to support and driving business improvement right across all areas of the N&P Product lines. Following the merger of PCS and Agrium the first stage of value improvement has been delivered through successful execution of the synergy plans. Synergies have just touched the surface and there remains huge potential to grow and develop the N&P business units both from an internally facing and an externally facing perspective. The Business Improvement and Development Director has an unique opportunity to be a key driver in how N&P execute on this significant opportunity. This will be achieved through delivering on strategic business improvement projects, helping N&P manage their investment dollars’ wisely, working closely right across the Business to do more with what we have today, and identifying additional opportunities in the market to further enhance our business.
Reporting to the Senior Director, Business Improvement & Development, and with a team of 3 people, along with support from the Business Analysis team, the Director Business Improvement & Development will be responsible for both actively developing existing opportunities and proactively identifying and delivering on new opportunities to grow the profitability of, and reduce potential risks to, the N&P business unit. Areas of responsibility will include managing the N&P Project Investment Portfolio ensuring we are wisely investing our investment budget to drive maximum capital efficiency, working closely with the Commercial, Sales and Transportation, Distribution and Logistics (TDL) teams to develop robust and measurable business improvement plans, aligning business improvement and development opportunities with strategy, managing business development opportunities within the N&P business unit including potential M&A or divestments, and negotiating contracts with third parties ensuring they maximize the commercial benefit to Nutrien.  
The role is a highly collaborative role and will be required to develop close working relationships with many groups including Innovation, Sales & Marketing, Commercial, Corporate Strategy, Corporate Development and Operations amongst other groups.
What you will do:
  • Plays a key role contributing to the formulation, development, prioritization and execution of Nutrien's N&P business strategy, including segment & geographic scans, macro/micro market analyses and strategic deep-dive & opportunity assessments
  • Work closely with Third Parties to develop and negotiate strategic contracts and long term business development opportunities
  • Contributes to the research, targeting, identification and analysis of potential acquisition and investment opportunities across the N&P business
  • Leads or plays a key role supporting the execution of M&A opportunities, and collaborating with internal stakeholders, across all phases of a potential transaction, including economic modelling, due diligence, deal negotiations and pre/post-close integration. 
  • Collaborates with members of senior and executive leadership across Nutrien's N&P business, as well as across Nutrien's corporate function and other businesses, to align on and articulate strategic growth priorities.

What you will bring:
  • At least 8-10 years of professional experience with demonstration of increasingly senior roles and responsibilities - combined with a strong track record of successfully leading and executing strategic formulation and/or M&A activity within a private/public company, investment bank or recognized consulting firm
  • Proven experience of leading negotiations with third parties and delivering high value commercial contracts with significant business improvement impact
  • Relevant experience working within or supporting/covering the agricultural crop inputs, agricultural retail and/or agricultural technology sectors strongly preferred
  • Strong understanding of commodity industry and agricultural value chain, including industry dynamics, fundamental/economic drivers, competitive landscape and emerging sector/technological trends
  • Financial designation or relevant post-graduate degree strongly preferred (CFA, CPA, MBA)
  • Ability to proactively and independently manage a high volume of competing priorities and potentially multiple transactions simultaneously, while formally and informally managing relationships with a wide variety of stakeholders
  • Travel estimated between 20-40%
