Job Description:

As a family-owned business operating for over seventy years, Norman's Nursery has established a reputation for quality. We farm 1400 production acres, specializing in a wide selection of trees, shrubs, and perennials, making us one of the West Coast's largest wholesale nurseries.

Job Summary
This is a full-time role for an experienced Production Manager to direct the daily operations of our 600-acre yard. The ideal candidate will lead yard operations with strategic direction by creating long-term plans that align with company goals, overseeing production, maintenance, and shipping, ensuring schedule adherence, maintaining facilities and equipment, managing supplies, and driving continuous improvement.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Production: Supervise all production activities, including plant maintenance, planting, and propagation; sowing, cutting, and transplanting, ensuring optimal quality. Manage pesticide and fertilizer applications, ensuring accurate measurements, equipment calibration, and proper documentation.
  • Staff: Supervise all workforce functions, including scheduling and training employees and contracted crews to ensure productivity, efficiency, and high-quality performance in daily operations. Manage time and attendance (ADP), performance, leave processing, injury handling, and employee discipline.
  • Inventory: Coordinate the tracking and inventory of all plants, ensure they are properly labeled and recorded in the system, and perform physical inventory of supplies.
  • Budgeting: Create and manage production forecasts and budgets to drive profitability and growth, while analyzing cost data to uncover opportunities for savings.
  • Compliance: Ensure compliance with company policies by implementing operational and administrative procedures, collaborating with HR on personnel issues, assisting in performance reviews, clarifying policies for employees, participating in safety investigations, and contributing to the development of safety and environmental objectives.
  • Collaboration: Coordinate and collaborate with various departments, clients, subcontractors, and suppliers to ensure seamless operations and address plant needs for optimal growth.

Requirements

  • Relevant experience in the agriculture industry, working in large yards.
  • Minimum 5 years of strong leadership and supervisory abilities.
  • Capable of establishing and maintaining performance standards and accountability in diverse teams.
  • Proficiency in managing labor, production, and maintenance costs.
  • Bilingual in Spanish.
  • Plant identification knowledge.
  • Knowledge of pesticide application, storage, safety, experience.
  • Experience with OSHA Safety and regulations.
  • Knowledge of maintaining equipment, tools, and tractors.
  • Familiarity with California wage and hour laws.
  • Experience with Microsoft Suite including Word and Excel.
