Sow Farm Manager
Location: Near Mapleton, Iowa
About Our Farm:
We have an 1800 head sow farm that's different from most. Our gestating sows live in open pens with outdoor access and an indoor bedded area. When the sows give birth in the farrowing barn, it's in open maternity boxes instead of crates. We believe in treating our animals with great care. Join our team and be part of this special farm!
The Job:
We are looking for a Sow Farm Manager to oversee everything that happens on the farm day-to-day. You will also lead a team of 5 to 7 people. If you care about animal welfare and know how to run a farm, this is a great opportunity!
What You Will Do:
- Manage Farm Operations: Oversee the daily tasks on the farm to make sure things run smoothly through all production phases from breeding to weaning.
- Lead the Team: Recruit, hire, train, and guide the farm team. Address performance issues in the team as needed.
- Daily Tasks: Organize and delegate tasks to the team - things like feeding, breeding, caring for young pigs, weaning pigs, moving pigs, and keeping the farm in good shape. Order feed and keep supplies stocked.
- Animal Welfare: Make sure our pigs are healthy and well-cared for. Work with Veterinarians to ensure herd health.
- Biosecurity: Ensure biosecurity best practices are implemented and followed on the farm.
- Farm Efficiency: Help the farm produce healthy pigs. Keep accurate records of vaccinations, illness, medications, breeding, sow inventory, etc. Conserve resources and work to do more with less.
- Safety: Ensure a safe working environment and safe working practices are followed by all.
- Maintenance: Complete basic repairs & maintenance on the farm and work with farm owners to arrange for bigger repairs when needed.
What We Are Looking For:
- Prior sow farm experience.
- Passion for animal welfare.
- Experience managing a team.
- Ability to organize tasks and manage time.
- Knowledge of basic animal health.
- Ability to do basic farm repairs.
- Good communication skills.
- Attention to detail.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Driver's License required.
