The Analytical Research and Development Mass Spectrometry group in Kenilworth, NJ is seeking an industry leader with technical expertise in mass spectrometry-based protein characterization. More specifically, the ideal candidate will have an extensive track record of advancing the development of biotherapeutics with mass spectrometry. This position has the opportunity to impact the analytical strategy for characterization of peptides, therapeutic proteins, antibody-drug conjugates, vaccines and cell therapies as well as various process residuals and formulation excipients. This Principal Scientist role will have the opportunity to influence the future direction of Mass Spectrometry within Analytical Research and Development at our company.

The ideal candidate is expected to be a leader in the field of mass spectrometry. This candidate will have an established track record for mentorship of junior talent and advancing scientific excellence through external presentations, publications, and regulatory engagements. Additionally, the candidate will have advanced knowledge for analytical experimental design and the ability to provide technical leadership for junior scientists as well as biotherapeutic pipeline programs. Finally, this Principal Scientist will be a partner in problem solving providing key leadership and driving collaboration both internally and externally.

Primary Responsibilities:
  • Lead a group of scientists focused on delivering mass spectrometry data to advance the pipeline.
  • Advance mass spectrometry methodology for peptide mapping, intact mass, native mass, HDX, sequence variants, quantitative analysis, and host cell protein analysis.
  • Author regulatory submission sections and responses, technical reports and scientific presentations.
  • Explore and develop new technologies to advance the field of mass spectrometry.
  • Demonstrate advanced multitasking, prioritization and problem-solving skills in the planning and execution of experiments.
  • Mentor and share expertise across the entire Analytical Research and Development department.
  • Champion compliance and safety as a leader both within and outside the laboratory.


Education Requirements:
  • Ph.D. in Analytical Chemistry, or Chemistry or Biological Sciences with 8+ years of biopharmaceutical industry experience.


Required Experience and Skills:
  • Expertise designing and conducting biologic mass spectrometry or proteomics experiments, including sample preparation, mass spectrometer operation and data analysis.
  • Extensive knowledge of Thermo, Sciex, Agilent and Waters instruments.
  • Expertise in multiple-reaction monitoring experiments and quantitative analysis.
  • Advanced knowledge of mass spectrometry data analysis packages and informatics platforms.
  • Experienced analytical knowledge and good understanding of biologics development, including multiple modalities such as peptides, fusion proteins, and ADCs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communications skills, as demonstrated through high impact scientific publications and presentations.


Preferred Experience and Skills:
  • Expertise in complex glycan analysis and impact on biologics structure and function.
  • Advanced knowledge of electronic laboratory notebook applications and good documentation practices.

$144,320.00 - $227,100.00
