Maintenance Technician

What you’ll be doing.  

  • Perform routine and preventive maintenance on all farm equipment, including tractors, planters, sprayers, harvesters, and irrigation systems.

  • Troubleshoot, diagnose, and repair mechanical and electrical issues in farm machinery using appropriate tools and diagnostic techniques, outsourcing work to qualified contractors as necessary.

  • Manage inventory of spare parts, fuel, lubricants, and maintenance consumables.

  • Utilize CMMS (computerized maintenance management software) to track parts inventory, maintenance records, and repairs costs.

  • Maintain professional relationships with contractors, suppliers, and service technicians.

  • Drive cost savings by obtaining quotes for equipment, materials, and services from multiple vendors to ensure competitive pricing. Evaluate quotes based on price, quality, reliability, and service terms to recommend optimal purchasing decisions.

  • Supervise and direct maintenance contractors when on site to ensure compliance with McCain safety policies.

  • Conduct regular inspections of equipment, focusing on fluid levels, wear, safety systems, and overall functionality to ensure operational readiness.

  • Oversee maintenance of farm buildings, storage facilities, offices, and other structures to ensure safety, regulatory compliance, and operational readiness.

  • Perform general building repairs, including basic carpentry, mechanical, and plumbing, outsourcing work to qualified contractors as necessary.

  • Clean and sanitize equipment, tools, and facilities to mitigate contamination risks and support food safety (in compliance with CanadaGAP, Environment Farm Plan, and workplace safety protocols).

  • Ensure personal work area is kept clean and organized.

  • Provide backup support for general farm operations as needed during peak seasons (planting, harvesting, and storage/shipping activities) including operating tractors, trucks, and storage equipment.

  • Foster and promote a safe work environment adhering to all McCain safety policies and procedures.

  • Demonstrate high level of professionalism collaborating with all employees, vendors, and researchers respectfully.

   

What you’ll need to be successful.  

  • Grade 12 or GED; preference will be given to a candidate who has post-secondary education in agricultural or heavy equipment repair.

  • Must have Class 3 license with airbrake endorsement or obtain as soon as possible.

  • Minimum 5 years of experience working with farm/heavy equipment. Experience operating a forklift, skid steer loader, or other PIV equipment is an asset.

  • A Pesticide Applicator’s License is considered an asset.

  • Experience or quick learner of precision ag technologies: GPS guidance systems (auto steer), variable rate inputs (fertilizer, seed spacing, irrigation), and yield monitors.

  • Computer skills (email, smart phones, tablets), ability to work various Microsoft Office programs (Word, Excel, Teams, Outlook), and ability to work use Computerized Maintenance Management Software (CMMS).

  • Experience with general building maintenance (carpentry, plumbing, mechanical)

  • Ability to inspect, calibrate, and make adjustments to various farm and storage equipment.

  • Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot and diagnose mechanical, electrical, and technical issues in farm equipment and systems.

  • Ability to read and understand mechanical diagrams and schematics.

  • Detail oriented with strong attention to detail.
