About the role.

The Health and Safety Manager provides strategic guidance to site leadership and oversees the implementation of safety programs, standards, and procedures. This role drives a strong safety culture, ensures regulatory compliance, and maintains readiness for emergencies, audits, and crisis situations while supporting continuous improvement across all health, safety, and security practices.

 

Accountabilities: 

  • Drive a Culture of Safety: Champion a culture of care, accountability, and zero harm by engaging employees at all levels. Partner with site leadership to embed health and safety as a core organizational value and promote proactive, safe work behaviors.
  • Ensure Regulatory & Company Compliance: Oversee compliance with all local, state/provincial, and federal health and safety requirements. Serve as the primary site contact for regulatory inspections and collaborate with corporate teams, legal partners, and community resources to maintain compliance for employees and contractors.
  • Provide Strategic Leadership: Act as a strategic partner and subject matter expert in behavior-based safety, injury prevention, and continuous improvement. Lead change initiatives that elevate performance and strengthen the site’s safety culture.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with engineering, maintenance, food safety, quality, and other functions to ensure new products, projects, and operations align with site safety standards and risk-reduction goals.
  • Implement Safety Programs & Systems: Lead the implementation and ongoing management of the company’s health & safety frameworks, including Key Elements of Safety (KES) and cultural assessments. Facilitate employee involvement, safety committees, and supervisory training to build a strong safety foundation.
  • Develop and Sustain Programs: Leverage internal and external resources to advance comprehensive health, safety, and security programs. Monitor industry trends and emerging regulations to keep the site informed and prepared.
  • Advance Continuous Improvement: Apply continuous improvement disciplines and participate in activities such as Kaizen events and safety-focused training. Support the use of Management Daily Improvement (MDI) tools to strengthen safety performance.
  • Measure Performance: Build and utilize tools to track and improve leading and lagging indicators, ensuring data-driven decision-making and performance transparency.
  • Manage Workers’ Compensation: Partner with Human Resources to oversee workers’ compensation processes and support safe return-to-work initiatives.
  • Lead Health, Wellness & Prevention Programs: Plan, budget, and execute initiatives that prevent injuries and illnesses and promote employee well-being, both on and off the job.
  • Oversee Site Security: Ensure compliance with company and regulatory security requirements. Manage site security systems, conduct regular audits, and implement corrective actions. Support food safety and security efforts as needed.
  • Emergency Preparedness: Maintain and update site emergency action and crisis management plans. Lead annual reviews and coordinate emergency response drills to ensure readiness.
  • Perform Additional Duties: Carry out other responsibilities as required to support site and corporate health and safety objectives.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities
Lead and develop the site Safety Coordinator(s). Report directly to the Plant Manager with a dotted-line relationship to the Regional Director of Health & Safety. Serve as a key influencer in shaping and sustaining the site’s health and safety culture.

 

Qualifications:

  •  Bachelor’s degree in occupational health & safety, or Certified Safety Professional (CSP).
  •  A minimum of 7 years of progressive and applicable experience in the field is required. 
  •  Working knowledge of Federal and State/Provincial occupational health & safety requirements and worker’s compensation/Work safe required. 
  •  Training experience and bilingual language skills are a plus. 
  •  ISO Management Systems experience is preferred 
  •  Good working knowledge of human resources and health & safety information systems.

  • Capable of simplifying and explaining complex regulatory or technical information for all employees.
  • Able to achieve results within both direct and dotted-line leadership structures.
  • Supports, leads, and maintains the company’s management system.
  • Leads continuous improvement activities (MDI) to enhance safety performance.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Outlook, Word, Excel, and PowerPoint; experience with EMIS/Intelex or similar platforms.

Compensation Package: $97,500 - $130,000   USD annually + Bonus eligibility

 

The above reflects the target compensation range for the position at the time of posting. Hiring compensation will be determined based on experience, skill set, education and training, and other organizational needs.
