Overview: This summer agriculture technician position is an entry-level temporary position for those interested in agricultural sciences, supply chain management, or onion crop research. This role provides firsthand experience in supporting the raw onion supply chain, with a focus on agronomy, new variety support, extension activities, and commercial crop intelligence gathering through field production and storage management.
Key Responsibilities:
Agronomy Research Trial and Extension Support:
- Aid in execution of research trials related to onion variety performance, agronomic performance, and soil health from planting to harvest.
- Collect agronomic data, including crop growth measurements, disease observations, and yield estimates as directed by regional Agronomist.
- Ensure accuracy and consistency in record-keeping and sample handling.
- Support regional agronomists by preparing materials, attending field days, and helping organize outreach events for growers.
- Build new partnerships with local universities, grower bases, and organizations to improve onion specific knowledge and technical support.
New Variety Evaluation Support:
- Participate in commercial-scale evaluations examining new onion varieties for yield, quality, disease resistance, and suitability for commercial production.
- Record and summarize observational data.
Commercial Crop Intelligence and Storage Management:
- Gather and report real-time crop development information from field visits across the growing region.
- Aid in assessments of crop health, expected production, and emerging challenges.
- Support post-harvest data collection on storage conditions and quality retention.
- Support operations team in harvest and storage activities, supervising loading crews and managing storage receiving.
Qualifications:
- Valid driver’s license and willingness to travel to field sites.
- Ability to work outdoors in varying conditions.
- Strong diligence, ability to follow protocols, and effective communication skills.
Professional Development:
- Exposure to the full onion supply chain and direct interface with commercial growers, researchers, and extension professionals.
- Opportunities for learning crop data analytics, summary reporting, and applied agronomic problem-solving.
- Participate in local industry events and symposiums.
- Travel to surroundings regions of ID and WA to learn other crops and visit other growers and if possible, visit our processing facilities in the region both potato and onion.
- Interact with other Ag. Technicians and interns take part in virtual or face-to-face meetings with other young professionals.
