Legal Counsel, Labour Employment, and Human Rights

 

The Legal Counsel, Labour, Employment, and Human Rights will provide legal and strategic support to our various business groups, including Human Resources, Labour Relations, and Retail Store and Supply Chain Operations. The Legal Counsel, Labour, Employment, and Human Rights will also provide guidance to Human Resources and Labour Relations professionals to support them with labour and employment related concerns while creating learning and development opportunities. The successful candidate will provide sound, practical advice, using strong judgment in a fast-paced business environment. 

 

Responsibilities

  • Representing the business at labour arbitration hearings, human rights mediations and hearings, and labour board mediations and hearings.
  • Delivering strategic advice to labour relations and human resources partners on a wide range of day-to-day labour and employment issues including collective agreement interpretation and discipline and termination matters.
  • Drafting, reviewing and revising a variety of labour and employment-related documents including employment agreements and policies.
  • Managing employment litigation matters.
  • Providing strategic and technical advice to the business pertaining to occupational health and safety obligations, workplace safety and insurance, and related statutory obligations.
  • Advising with regards to employee privacy issues to ensure compliance with statutory and common-law obligations.
  • Initiating and providing training sessions for the business to ensure a common and well-informed approach to all aspects of human resources management, as well as compliance with statutory and common law obligations.

 

Qualifications

  • Minimum 2 years post call of extensive experience in all aspects of management-side labour and employment law matters, either at a firm, in-house, or a combination.
  • Demonstrated experience conducting labour arbitrations and human rights hearings.
  • Excellent oral advocacy skills.
  • Strong analytical and drafting skills.
  • A strategic and business-oriented mindset, to ensure that litigation strategy supports the businesses interests (short and long term), while mitigating risks.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in immigration matters and AODA compliance would be an asset.
