Large Animal Veterinary Nurse Supervisor

Job Summary:

UW Veterinary Care is seeking a dedicated and experienced Veterinary Nurse Supervisor to lead our Large Animal Hospital unit. The ideal candidate will possess strong leadership skills, extensive large animal veterinary technical knowledge and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment. The Veterinary Nurse Supervisor will oversee the daily operations of the 24/7 Large Animal Hospital, ensuring exceptional patient care, managing a team of veterinary nurses, veterinary assistants, and student hourlies while working closely with the large animal hospital facility management team, students and clinicians and maintaining a supportive and efficient work environment.

Responsibilities:

• Supervises and executes technical work within a specified animal care unit, and/or develops and enforces procedures and protocols, and manages personnel to ensure attainment of organization goals.
• 10% Exercises supervisory authority, including hiring, transferring, suspending, promoting, managing conduct and performance, discharging, assigning, rewarding, disciplining, and/or approving hours worked of at least 2.0 full-time equivalent (FTE) employees
• 10% Schedules logistics and secures resources to ensure adequate staffing, equipment, and supplies to ensure optimal operation of a designated animal care unit
• 10% Prepares, completes, and documents technical animal care procedures, assessments, and medication administration according to established care plans and medical necessity
• 10% Develops animal care procedures, protocols, and affiliated reference materials to ensure compliance with established rules and regulations
• 40% Provides nursing animal care for patients and works alongside other veterinary technicians in the unit
• 10% Assist with orientation for 4th year students on Large Animal rotations and onboarding of house officers
• 10% Works closely with LAH facility managers to help them maintain a clean and safe hospital environment and help as needed and work on special projects as assigned

Tasks:

• Assist and participate in the instruction and educational experiences for veterinary students and pre-vet students
• Ensure appropriate charge capture for the services provided to the patients
• Work with facilities manager and help ensure large animal building projects and remodeling projects are on task and inform appropriate personnel when issues arise
• Ensure large animal equipment is maintained appropriately and serve as point of contact for vendor relations and clinicians for any equipment related issues
• Ensure staff, students and resident clinicians are dispensing drugs and controlled substances in accordance with UWVC Pharmacy regulations. Assist with inventory/record keeping for controlled substances to ensure state and federal compliance
• Ensure that bovine and equine plasma is stocked in accordance with clinician/patient needs
• Establish and maintain appropriate policies, procedures and standards of performance regarding different aspects of patient care. Monitor compliance with policies, procedures and standards. Provide feedback regarding breeches of compliance
• Monitor infectious disease trends in the large animal hospital, follow appropriate isolation and disinfection practices in the hospital and inform and train staff and students for the same.Participate in rotating on-call shifts as needed
• Provide primary leadership and management direction for Large Animal Technicians, assistants and student employees
• Responsible for ensuring staffing is maintained in all areas of responsibility to ensure patient care, client care, and operational needs are met.
• Responsible for participating in other duties as needed or assigned

Education:

• Required
• H.S. Diploma Preferred Associate's Degree

Qualifications:

• A minimum of 5 years of CVT experience required, ideally with equine and livestock patients.?
• A minimum of 2 years previous leadership experience strongly preferred.?Requires the ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs. independently and physical and manual dexterity to perform specialized technical tasks.
• Strong communication skills required.

License/Certification:

• Required - CVT - Certified Veterinary Technician
• Preferred - VTS - Veterinary Tech Specialist

Work Schedule:

Monday - Friday, hours between 6:00AM - 5:00PM; Occasional on-call and holidays required as part of the 24/7 Large Animal hospital.

Salary:

Minimum $28.00 HOURLY
Depending on Qualifications - Sign-on Bonus of 5% of base pay (based on FTE) to be paid over the first year of employment. In addition to your competitive base compensation, Earn an extra $6.00/hour for weeknight shifts,- $4.80/hour for weekend day shifts and - $7.80/hour for weekend night shifts! UWVC also offers a reimbursement for relocation fees for those who qualify!
