Job Description:

We are seeking a motivated Farm Manager who shares a passion for farming to oversee our PEI farm operation, and drive performance while aligning with organizational goals regarding productivity, profitability, sustainability, safety, and innovation. The ideal candidate will be a passionate, hands-on leader with strong agricultural expertise and proven experience managing large-scale fruit production, preferably berries. This role involves some travel within our Canadian and US farm operations.
 
Key Responsibilities:
Operational Oversight
  • Overseeing all PEI farm activities, including land preparation, vegetation and pest management, pollination activities, and harvest.
  • Leading and mentoring a team of farm operators.
  • Managing labour needs across peak seasons, including harvest and pollination.
  • Working alongside the Agronomy team in monitoring soil health, pest pressure, and crop performance, and making recommendations to deal with any issues.
  • Developing and implementing fertilization and weed control plans, in collaboration with the Agronomy team.
 
Safety and Compliance
  • Overseeing the maintenance and use of farm machinery, ensuring the equipment is safe and operational at all times.
  • Ensuring adherence to environmental standards and food safety certifications.
  • Implementing best practices in all aspects of the farm operations. 
  • Fostering a culture of safety, accountability, and continuous improvement.
 
Pollination
  • Coordinating the import of bee hives from licensed apiaries.
  • Ensuring compliance with all regulations regarding bee health certification, transport permits, etc.
  • Assessing pollination requirements. Planning hive placement within field crops for optimal pollination coverage. Collaborating with Agronomists to implement best practices.
 
Budgeting and Long-Range Planning
  • Leading the planning process for major capital projects such as land acquisitions, equipment upgrades, and infrastructure development.
  • Creating and managing the annual farm budget and forecast.
  • Managing farm profitability through cost control, yield optimization, and effective risk mitigation.
  • Working with Finance and Management to support farm development and product pricing.
  • Collaborating with Senior Management on strategic initiatives and expansion opportunities.
  • Evaluating opportunities to improve sustainability and profitability.
 
Key Skills and Qualifications
Skills
  • Proficiency with farm management software and GPS technology is an asset. 
  • Innovative, curious, and driven to achieve better outcomes, coupled with a passion for farming.
  • Positive, proactive, and solutions-oriented mindset.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills with a team-focused approach.
  • Familiarity with government agricultural policy and bee import regulations is an asset.
 
Education and Credentials
  • A post-secondary education in Agriculture, or a related field. Equivalent experience may be considered.
  • A minimum of 5-7 years of experience in commercial farming, preferably in wild blueberry crops or similar is an asset. 
  • A valid Class 5 Driver’s license is required, a Class 3 License is an asset.
