SUMMARY:  Supervises all research and development activities within assigned area in accordance with the goals and objectives of the Research and Development Department. Organizes and implements field, greenhouse, and laboratory research in the respective California Division of Helena Chemical.  Research activities will be conducted with Helena's proprietary and other industry standard and experimental products. Data management, technical service, demonstration of new products, and training seminars to Helena's and industry staff.  Plans, implements and monitors R & D activities.  Must primarily perform office and field work directly related to management policies or general business & research operations.  Also, must exercise independent choice and judgment in matters of consequence 50% or more of the time.




Develops protocols for product testing.  This includes all greenhouse, field screenings, plots, commercial use, and cooperative testing within assigned area.


Conducts field and greenhouse research with agrichemical, seed, fertilizer, and Helena proprietary products.


Negotiates and monitors the collection, packaging, shipping, disposal of all products used in R&D within assigned area.


Monitors trials; documents results with film, digital picture, video, notes, etc.


Collects, compiles analyzes, and compares the data from trials.


Preparation of formal data summaries/reports to be provided to appropriate personnel in support for the editing of use labels, technical sheets, technical bulletins, and other information related to the products.


Communicates results of testing/development to appropriate departments, vendors, academia, customers and others as necessary.  This includes oral presentation at sales, training, supplier, field day, and other professional meetings.


Negotiates agreed upon funds and monitors and controls budget.


Attends trade shows and meetings to assist with booth.


Provides input related to R&D activities


Utilizes voice mail, phone/fax and face-to-face meetings with Region, Division and Corporate staff to maintain good communication.


Pursues training and education in areas pertaining to responsibilities.


Other work-related duties as assigned by supervisor/manager.


Reliable and regular attendance is expected.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:  Master of Science in Agriculture or related field or 3 years R&D experience in the agricultural or related industry and an understanding of formal research disciplines.

The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate; however, periodic access to R&D plots, demonstrations, tours and production will require loud noise levels.
