JOB DESCRIPTION:

 

Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a Crops Operations Manager for a progressive dairy operation in Connecticut. This individual will oversee all aspects of crop production, from planning and planting through harvest and storage, with the goal of producing high-quality corn silage, haylage, soybeans, and other feed crops for the dairy herd. This is a hands-on leadership role combining employee management, equipment operation, agronomic oversight, manure and nutrient management, compliance, and data-driven decision-making. The Crops Operations Manager works side-by-side with the team daily and plays a key role in overall farm, facility, and equipment maintenance, while promoting a safe, efficient, and team-oriented work environment.

Key Responsibilities:
 

Leadership & Team Management
- Organize, lead, and manage the crops team
- Work closely with the Director of Operations on daily and long-term priorities
- Communicate clearly and effectively with all farm departments
- Start each day with a clear plan for the team
- Assign, delegate, and follow up on daily and weekly tasks
- Train employees on tasks, equipment operation, and safety procedures
- Provide ongoing performance feedback and address issues promptly
- Resolve conflicts professionally when they arise
- Create and manage weekly team schedules
- Review employee hours weekly and approve payroll
Approve invoices and bills through Stampli

Crop Production & Agronomy
- Oversee all crop operations, including:
     - Corn silage, haylage, soybeans, and other forage or grain crops
     - Manure handling, application, and dragline operations
     - Fertilizer application and nutrient management
     - Planting, drilling, spraying, harvesting, and packing the pile
     - Trucking coordination during harvest
- Coordinate crop planning, rotations, and seasonal priorities
- Manage soil health, fertility, and long-term land productivity
- Track feed quality and work to continuously improve crop outcomes
- Ensure timely ordering and delivery of grain, fertilizer, seed, and crop inputs


Manure Management
- Ensure manure is applied accurately, efficiently, and in compliance with nutrient management plans
- Work closely with agronomists and regulators to maximize nutrient value while protecting soil and water quality

Equipment Operation
- Work hands-on alongside the team operating equipment and semi-trucks
- Promote and enforce safe equipment operation at all times
- Hold team members accountable for proper equipment care and operation
- Maintain CDL compliance and safe operating practices

Maintenance & Repairs
- Oversee maintenance of all crop equipment and farm facilities
- Ensure equipment is repaired promptly and maintained in good working condition
- Assist hands-on with repairs and maintenance as needed
- Coordinate preventative maintenance to minimize downtime during critical seasons
- Identify maintenance needs proactively and address issues before escalation

Crop Data & Performance Analysis
- Understand and track cost of production
- Regularly review crop and operational performance metrics
- Research and implement improvements to reduce costs and increase efficiency
- Provide input on key performance metrics and lead implementation of changes

Compliance & Regulations
- Ensure CAFO and CNMP plans are current and followed at all times
- Work with FSA to keep all maps current and ensure landowner paperwork is complete and signed
- Work with NRCS to maintain compliance with all programs and identify and support grant opportunities
- Maintain accurate records and documentation

Safety
- Promote a strong safety culture within the crops team
- Facilitate safety training as needed
- Ensure compliance with all safe work practices and procedures

Community & Landowner Relation
- Help build and maintain a positive reputation in the community
- Develop and maintain strong relationships with neighboring farmers and landowners
- Oversee landowner relationships and land rents
- Assist in identifying opportunities to grow the land base
