JOB DESCRIPTION:
Hansen Agri-PLACEMENT is searching for a qualified Backgrounding Manager for a Wyoming cattle operation that is in the process of purchasing a well-designed backgrounding lot in Wyoming. This is an opportunity for a dependable, self-starting cattleman to step into a management role and take day-to-day responsibility for a growing backgrounding operation. This position will largely operate independently, as the property is located roughly three hours from the owners' main ranch headquarters, so the employer needs someone who is trustworthy, observant, and capable of taking ownership of the operation.
This backgrounding yard is designed to handle approximately 1,500 to 1,800 head, depending on cattle size, and will primarily be used for the owners' own cattle along with some purchased calves coming straight off the ranch. The focus of the operation is backgrounding, with the possibility over time of handling some additional cow/calf responsibilities and helping develop limited summer grazing on irrigated acreage. The feeding program is already established and relies heavily on straw, silage, dry distillers, and beet pulp, with minimal hay use beyond starting calves.
The employer is looking for someone with a strong cattle background, especially in backgrounding, cattle feeding, animal health, and general feedlot management. This person needs to have a good eye for cattle, be able to identify health issues early, understand treatment protocols, and keep cattle performing. Employer is open to an individual or possibly a couple, depending on the overall fit, but in either case they want someone who can take responsibility for the operation and help it run smoothly.
A house will be provided and is expected to be a new three-bedroom manufactured home, with utilities at least partially covered. This is a good opportunity for someone wanting a more independent role, someone ready to step out on his own, or possibly an experienced cattleman looking for a setting where he can manage cattle with less corporate structure and more personal responsibility.
Primary Responsibilities:
- Oversee day-to-day operation of a backgrounding lot handling 1,500 to 1,800 head
- Monitor cattle health closely and identify problems early
- Diagnose, treat, and manage animal health issues in a timely manner
- Receive and process incoming calves
- Manage feeding program and monitor cattle performance
- Maintain bunks, pens, water systems, drainage, and general yard condition
- Keep accurate treatment and feeding records
- Work with owners on cattle performance, receiving protocols, and management decisions
- Assist with general upkeep and annual maintenance of the facility
- Potentially assist with limited cow/calf or grazing responsibilities as operation expands
- Possibly help with irrigation and grazing management in the future on approximately 250-300 acres
BENEFITS:
New 3 Bedroom Home, Electricity, 3 Weeks Paid Vacation (taken during summer), Continuing Education, Work Computer w/ Scanner/Printer
