The credibility and applicability of research results can be greatly improved by conducting trials under commercial conditions similar to those in which the results are to be applied. At Gowans, we conduct research in facilities of typical commercial design and scale, using proper experimental design and control.
 
About the Role
This is an exceptional entry-level opportunity for a highly motivated individual to join our technical team. The Poultry Research Barn Assistant is critical to the successful execution of our poultry nutrition trials, responsible for all aspects of barn management, detailed data collection, and analysis. The ideal candidate will be a high-potential individual, preferably with an MSc, who is eager to grow into a poultry nutrition career.
 
Farm management training will be provided.
 
Key Functions
Research Barn Management & Setup:
  • Set up the research barn facility (e.g., bedding, feeders, brooders) prior to trials.
  • Actively manage the barn environment, including monitoring and adjusting ventilation, temperature, and general conditions.
  • Ensure compliance with all regulations, including maintaining Chicken Farmers of Ontario and Turkey Farmers of Ontario standards.
 
Research Trial Execution:
  • Serve as the primary contact for all research trials, ensuring smooth and accurate execution.
  • Conduct detailed manual procedures such as bird weighing and precise feed weighing, with a strong focus on accuracy.
  • Perform regular flock health observations and routine barn management.
  • Manually feed birds according to the trial protocol.
 
Data Management & Analysis:
  • Perform thorough data collection and entry for research trials.
  • Conduct basic data analysis for both research and commercial farm data.
  • Compile close-out analysis, including feeding curves and other performance data.
  • Input general data to maintain and update internal databases.
 
Equipment & Maintenance:
  • Clean and maintain the research barn between trials, including litter removal (shoveling and wheelbarrow work), dry cleaning, and power washing as needed.
  • Clean and pressure wash shipping crates.
  • Maintain research equipment and manage the ordering and inventory of necessary supplies.
 
Turkey Farm Support:
  • Assist with duties at the turkey farm during slower periods or trial downtime, particularly during brooding and poult-moving activities.
 
Job Realities
  • Irregular Hours: This role requires flexibility and a willingness to work irregular hours, including:
    • Weekend and Evening Checks: Performing barn checks on weekends and evenings, especially when primary management staff are away or during new bird placement.
    • Shipping Duties: Participation in shipping, which involves night work. This includes collecting accurate data and assisting the crew with lifting birds and crates as needed.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to lift up to 25kg.
 
Qualifications
  • University Degree or College Diploma required; a Master of Science (MSc) is strongly preferred.
  • Fluency in English.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Suite (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams) for reporting and data documentation.
  • Ability to do statistical analysis on trial data.  Experience with SAS an asset. 
  • Possess a reliable vehicle and valid driver’s license.
  • Must be able to operate independently to resolve problems and possess effective time management skills to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
 
Compensation and Benefits
  • Competitive Hourly Wage: $26.00 - $30.00 per hour, commensurate with experience and qualifications.
