Do you enjoy troubleshooting problems? GK Jim Group of Companies is interested in hiring a responsible, detailed–oriented science trained individual to focus on management of calves at our calf ranch operation. This is a challenging position that requires critical thinking and problem-solving skills, as well as strong communication, organization, time-management, and coordination skills.

 

GK Jim Group of Companies (GKJ) is large cattle feeding organization with cattle ownership, feedlot operations, calf ranches, and calf depots across Canada and the US.  We collaborate with various dairy, calf grower, feedlot, and abattoir data systems to collect proprietary individual animal data linked from conception to carcass. We work to connect information from the financial unit (lot or multiple lots) down to the individual animal to make informed data-based decisions that optimize the profitability of our companies. The GKJ Team is currently comprised of 20-25 individuals with expertise in accounting, tax management, cattle buying, transportation logistics, data collation & entry working alongside of 5 professionals with advanced training/recognized expertise in feedlot animal health and welfare, animal production, agricultural economics, meat science, nutrition, applied research, statistical analysis, and economic modeling.

 

We are hiring a full-time permanent Calf Ranch Production & Research Manager with a focus on feeder cattle production optimization at our calf ranch.

Job Duties:

  • Oversee management and protocols of calves from arrival as day-olds to shipment
  • Communicate problems and potential problems with the Newcan management team
  • Accountable for calf performance at all stages of production (arrival, weaning, out of hutch, corral phase, and shipment of high-quality feeders)

Employment Requirements:

  • Enjoy the challenge of troubleshooting calf management and calf ranch protocols to solve problems and optimize feeder cattle production
  • Bilingual (English and Spanish) or willing to learn Spanish immediately
  • Minimum of Bachelor of Science in Animal Science up to and including Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Animal Science. 
  • Individuals with extensive experience of calf raising are preferred and will be given consideration regardless of formal educational qualifications.
  • Proven ability to analyze issues, exercise good judgment, and proactively respond to requests
  • Exceptional degree of accuracy, attention to detail, and organizational skills
  • Proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel, and Access
  • Excellent time management, oral, and written communication
  • Professional, responsive, and a positive work attitude is essential
  • Ability to work efficiently, independently and as part of a team
  • Some travel will be required

Terms of Employment:

  • Full time permanent position located at the Newcan Calf Ranch near Portales, NM
  • Competitive salary based on experience and education
  • Housing is available if desired (Four-bedroom house)
  • Computer, vehicle, and other tools required for the job will be provided

Schedule:

  • This is a 40 hour, five days per week role
  • Hours of work are generally 7:00 am – 3:00 pm Monday to Friday
