Job Description:

 

Qualifications:

  • Basic knowledge of agriculture. 
  • Willing to learn. Double checking what's in the map verses what's in the field. 
  • Able to follow directions; quick learner. 
  • Willing to report findings. 
  • Good communication skills. 
  • There will be two locations -- must be able to drive a client vehicle to get to the other location.


 

Responsibilities:

  • Must be punctual and organized. Be responsible for for returning plants after planting. Watering plants. Plant counting after first week of planting. Replant if needed -- be able to identify when this needs to be done. Labeling plants. Training will be provided. Be present with critical tasks, for example, pollination in Esparto location. Flower count for watermelons trial.

 

Position purpose:

  •     Farm Specialist is responsible to supervise the operational work related to the RD Farm. Support activities in an efficient and effective manner to provide the necessary services to the Breeding, Research, Operations, PD and M&S programs and projects.


 

Major Accountabilities:

  •     Support and supervise activities related to Breeding, Research, PD, and M&S teams under the direction of the Sr. Farm Manager such as tractor work, pesticides applications, irrigations and fertilization. Crops in scope: watermelon, melon, processing tomatoes, hot peppers and lettuces. 
  •     Responsible for scouting and crop monitoring, fulfilling a critical role in the Integrate pest management (IPM)
  •     Use farm facilities in a proper and safe way, following company regulations and guidelines.
  •     Data collection (excel).

Education: 

  •     Bachelor's degree with minimum 1 year of relevant experience or related to specific Agriculture Crop Growing 
  •     High School degree with 2 years of experience in agriculture. 


 

Work experience:

  •    Minimum of 1 years of relevant experience in the areas of farm, agriculture and crop management in crops like watermelon, melon, processing tomatoes, hot peppers and lettuces. 


 

Competences:

  •     Communicating 
  •     Computer basic
  •    Knowledge on crop management and crop growing concepts (e.g. pest control - irrigation - nutrition) measures and application

 

Skills:

  •     Solution-oriented  
  •    Detail orientated 
  •     Comfortable communicating and performing in a diverse team
  •     Valid Driver's License


 

Required communication skills:

  •     Preferred bilingual Spanish and English


 

Working conditions:

  •     This position is regularly challenged by Constantly evolving environmental conditions, like cold, heat, wet and dusty conditions and after hours. Constant change of farm equipment, people, agronomic practices, technology etc.
