ORGANIZATION DESCRIPTION:

Dreaming Out Loud creates economic opportunities for the DC metro region’s  marginalized community members through building a healthy, equitable food  system. POSITION SUMMARY:

Dreaming Out Loud, Inc. (DOL) is looking for someone with an interest in farming or gardening, and loves the idea of making sure people have access to good quality, locally grown food. We need your help with our farming projects at The Farm at Kelly Miller, Fort Stanton Urban Farm, and Nettie Farm in Deanwood. This is a grant-funded role, and you’d be signing on to work with us for 240 hours during the spring and summer of 2024, working about 20 hours a week.
DOL and A-Peace, LLC urban agriculture projects are innovative, community-based initiatives. We’ve teamed up with the District Department of Parks and Recreation and some community and non-profit groups to transform each farm into a community-based center of agricultural learning.  This is a great opportunity to take part in workshops, and get exposure to what it’s like to grow food for schools. Our big goals? Use sustainable and organic farming to get healthy food into communities in wards 7 and 8, boost our community’s ability to improve community food security, provide training and support to low-resourced entrepreneurs, and create jobs right here in the neighborhood.

As our Farm and Agriculture Intern, your role is important and will help with everything to kick start our growing season and move our projects forward. You will report to the Farm & Agriculture Program Manager, and will also work side by side with our Farm Coordinators and Assistants, community members, volunteers, and other farmers.
The ideal candidate will be able to work in various weather conditions, and work well in groups and independently. We welcome someone with strong communication skills who believes in getting the job done.  The candidate should be familiar with computers and able to communicate using email and Slack.
Sound like your kind of gig? Let’s grow something great together!

EQUAL OPPORTUNITY STATEMENT:

DOL provides equal employment opportunities (EEO) to all employees and applicants  for employment without regard to race, color, religion, sex, gender, gender identity,  sexual orientation, national origin, age, disability or genetics. In addition to federal law  requirements, DOL complies with applicable state and local laws governing  nondiscrimination in employment in every location in which the organization has  facilities. This policy applies to all terms and conditions of employment, including  recruiting, hiring, placement, promotion, termination, layoff, recall, and transfer, leaves  of absence, compensation and training.
Compensation: $20.00 per hour

DOL is rebuilding urban, community-based food systems through cooperative social enterprise: increasing access to healthy food, improving community health, supporting entrepreneurs and cooperatives from low-income communities; and creating opportunities for at-risk residents to earn sustainable, family-supporting wages and build wealth. We believe that all communities deserve equal access to fresh, healthy food choices, but that achieving this requires moving beyond the “access” paradigm to a focus on community self-determination and food sovereignty. We are working to create an integrated pipeline to jobs, economic opportunity, and community wealth-building for our most marginalized communities, utilizing the food system as the catalyst.
