West Fraser is seeking a motivated individual to assist with a 4-month, starting May 1st, field-based program to locate and document native fish habitat in forested areas of West-Central Alberta. The position will be based out of Blue Ridge, Alberta (Whitecourt, AB) with some travel in the region required.

Aquatic Ecology Field Assistant Internship (4 months)
 

Responsibilities
 

  • Evaluate the performance of erosion control measures over various crossing structures and crossing durations (1-3 year temporary roads).
  • Describe the characteristics of riparian areas as they relate to fish habitat.
  • Co-develop beneficial management practices for forestry operations.
     

Our Ideal Candidate Would Have
 

  • Confidence and competency in fieldwork.
  • Basic knowledge of geographic information systems (GIS).
  • Familiarity with bush safety and environmental responsibilities.
  • Understanding of stream morphology and aquatic environmental monitoring.
  • Ability to identify terrestrial vegetation and/or willingness to develop this skill.
  • Knowledge of native trout biology.
  • Preference for second- and third-year biology, ecology, or forestry students.

  • Eligibility to work in Canada
  • Class 5 drivers licence
