Wendy Powers becomes Dean of the University of Maryland’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources from July 1, 2025, focusing on research, education, and community service under the land-grant mission.

The University of Maryland has selected Wendy Powers as the new Dean of the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources, effective July 1, 2025. Powers will guide the college’s teaching, research, and outreach goals, continuing its mission to serve Maryland and beyond.

As Dean, Powers will also lead the Agricultural Experiment Station and University of Maryland Extension (UME). UME offers community-based programs across the state in areas like food systems, natural resources, 4-H youth development, and family sciences. It operates in every Maryland county and Baltimore City, along with four research and education centers.

“Dr. Powers possesses an exceptional track record in leading agricultural colleges to achieve remarkable success in fulfilling their core mission of serving communities,” said Senior Vice President and Provost Jennifer King Rice. “I am confident that her leadership will bring similar success to the University of Maryland, propelling the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources into its next phase of excellence.”

Before joining Maryland, Powers served as the Dean at Washington State University for the College of Agricultural, Human, and Natural Resource Sciences. She managed 13 departments and WSU Extension with more than 40 offices statewide. Under her leadership, the college raised over $100 million in grants and improved its national ranking.

Her earlier roles include leadership positions at the University of California and Michigan State University, where she focused on agriculture education and outreach. She began her academic career at Iowa State University.

“I am thrilled to join the University of Maryland,” said Powers. “I look forward to collaborating with communities on campus and beyond to build new and innovative opportunities for students, faculty and staff.”
