Ted Schroeder earns the Amethyst Award for 40 years of service, research, and leadership at Kansas State University, shaping agricultural economics and guiding students and industry leaders worldwide.

Kansas State University honors Ted Schroeder with the prestigious Amethyst Award, recognizing his lifetime of service and major contributions to agricultural economics. This award is the highest honor given by the university and celebrates individuals who support the well-being of society through leadership and dedication.

Schroeder serves the university for 40 years and plays an important role in teaching, research, and mentoring students. He joins the faculty in 1986 as an assistant professor, becomes a full professor in 1996, and is named a distinguished professor in 2004. His long career shows his strong commitment to education and agriculture.

"The Amethyst Award recognition is an honor beyond comprehension," Schroeder said. "To even be considered to join a list with the likes of Amy Button Renz, a K-State icon, is immensely humbling. I am forever grateful for the fantastic collaborators I have had the opportunity to work with, the truly amazing students I have had the privilege of engaging with, and the agricultural industry leaders I have learned so much from over the years. I thank President Linton and the gracious supporters of K-State and our programs for this generous notation."

Schroeder focuses his research on improving market systems in agriculture, especially in the beef industry. He studies pricing methods, risk management, and ways to improve market efficiency. Over his career, he writes many research articles, book chapters, and reports that help both students and industry professionals.

He also helps guide important industry changes. During a challenging time in the U.S. beef sector, he plays a key role in advising the development of U.S. Premium Beef, a program that improves product quality and market demand.

In addition to research, Schroeder secures millions of dollars in funding through grants and donations. These funds support student learning and research programs at the university. He also advises lawmakers and speaks at many industry events, helping people understand complex agricultural topics.

Throughout his career, he receives many awards for teaching, research, and leadership. However, he believes his greatest achievement is seeing his students succeed in their careers.

Ted Schroeder’s work continues to influence agriculture, education, and the global food system, making him a respected leader in his field.
