NOVUS has strengthened its commitment to innovation by appointing Dr. Steven (Shaohua) Guan as manager of microbiology, molecular biology, and fermentation lead. His role supports NOVUS’s mission to create smarter, science-based nutrition products for animal agriculture.
In this new position, Dr. Guan will focus on building the company’s microbiology and fermentation capabilities. He will design, execute, and analyze a wide range of research projects related to enzymes, direct-fed microbials (DFMs), and other fermentation-based products. These studies will be conducted both at NOVUS’s global headquarters in Missouri and through external research partners.
“I am excited to join the NOVUS Innovation team. I am eager to contribute to innovation projects, collaborate with co-development partners on strategic initiatives requiring specialized expertise, and provide crucial support to the applied research and regulatory affairs teams,” he says.
Dr. Guan brings more than 20 years of experience in fermentation process development at laboratory, pilot, and production scales. His background includes optimizing fermentation processes for bacteria, yeasts, and filamentous fungi across the food, feed, pharmaceutical, and agricultural industries. He has previously served as principal scientist at Dalan Animal Health, senior scientist at Kemin Industries, and director of bioprocessing R&D at Agricen Sciences.
Gaurav Shah, associate director of innovation at NOVUS, emphasized that Guan’s appointment marks a key step in expanding in-house research. “Steven’s extensive experience in fermentation and microbiology will help us bring forward-thinking, science-based solutions to customers more efficiently,” Shah says.
“Building this capability in-house, coupled with our strengths in process chemistry, formulation, and analytical sciences, puts us in a position to accelerate our innovation efforts and strengthen our leadership in intelligent nutrition.”
