Purdue University honored Marsh, Sheiss, and Tharp with its 2025 alumni awards, celebrating their exceptional achievements and leadership in veterinary medicine, livestock management, and animal health innovation.

Purdue University’s Department of Animal Sciences has recognized three alumni with the 2025 Distinguished Animal Sciences Alumni Awards for their significant contributions to animal agriculture and veterinary science.

The awards span three career levels and honor graduates who have demonstrated leadership, innovation, and service in their fields.

Dr. Bret Marsh, DVM, received the Lifetime Award. Known for his longstanding commitment to veterinary medicine and public health, Dr. Marsh has led major efforts to improve livestock industry policies and health standards at state and national levels.

Eric Sheiss was honored with the Mid-Career Award for his leadership in swine production and livestock management. His innovations have boosted productivity and introduced new operational benchmarks that benefit the broader animal agriculture industry.

Nicholas Tharp received the Early Career Award for his promising contributions to animal health and production systems. Despite being early in his career, Tharp has already made a meaningful impact with his research and commitment to animal welfare.

Award eligibility is based on when recipients earned their first degree from the department: early career (2009–2019), mid-career (1993–2008), and lifetime achievement (1992 or earlier). The honorees were selected for their career accomplishments and service beyond the workplace.

“Swine Web congratulates all three honorees on their achievements and continued impact on the livestock industry.”

The 2025 awards reflect Purdue’s commitment to recognizing excellence in agriculture and encouraging graduates who contribute to the advancement of animal science, rural communities, and sustainable livestock practices.
