Six university students receive On Farm Support science scholarships to help build careers in farm advisory services, supporting future agricultural leadership, science-based decision-making, and stronger on-farm support for farmers and growers.

Six university students have been awarded taxpayer funded On Farm Support science scholarships aimed at developing the next generation of farm advisers. The program supports students studying agriculture-related subjects and helps strengthen on-the-ground advisory services for farmers and growers.

Agriculture Minister Todd McClay and Associate Agriculture Minister Andrew Hoggard said the scholarships are part of wider efforts to support the farming sector through education and practical expertise.

“This government is backing the sector by supporting the next generation of on-farm advisers,” McClay said.

The 2026 scholarships are awarded to students enrolled in agricultural science, commerce, and environmental sustainability degrees. Each student receives $5000 for the year and gains mentoring from the Ministry for Primary Industries On Farm Support team. This mentorship provides valuable experience, networking opportunities, and career guidance.

The scholarship recipients are Cameron Brans, Jack Green, Fraser Wilson, and Eibhlin Lynch from Lincoln University, Ella Hogan from Massey University, and Cecily Holland from the University of Canterbury. Their interests include dairy, sheep, beef, horticulture, arable production, sustainability, agri-tech, and rural business development.

“Recipients in the scholarship programme are also mentored by members of the Ministry for Primary Industries On Farm Support team, providing hugely beneficial experience and networking opportunities,” Hoggard said.

The program highlights the importance of science-based advice in modern agriculture. By supporting students with strong academic backgrounds and practical goals, the scholarships help connect research, policy, and farm management.

Overall, the On Farm Support science scholarships encourage young professionals to enter agricultural advisory careers and help build a strong, sustainable future for the food and fibre sector.
