Mary Gardiner receives the prestigious Distinguished Professor title for her significant impact in entomology and community outreach at Ohio State.

The Ohio State University College of Food, Agricultural, and Environmental Sciences (CFAES) has honored Mary Gardiner with the title of Distinguished Professor for the academic year 2024-2025.

This prestigious recognition is awarded to full professors who have demonstrated excellence in teaching, research, outreach, and engagement.

Gardiner has secured over $8.1 million in grant funding and published 74 peer-reviewed articles, greatly advancing the field of entomology.

Her research has garnered international attention, evidenced by her H-index of 30 and more than 4,000 citations.

Gardiner’s work primarily focuses on how urban green spaces can support biodiversity and benefit community health, particularly in economically disadvantaged areas.

The Cleveland Pocket Prairie Project investigates the ecological impacts of converting vacant urban lots into native wildflower habitats.

Results from this study reveal that these green spaces are vital for Ohio’s bee population, hosting 37% of the state’s bee species, thereby enhancing urban biodiversity and ecosystem services.

Gardiner's role extends beyond research. She is a committed mentor, having guided 16 graduate students and numerous undergraduates, many from underrepresented groups. Her mentorship has helped shape future leaders in academia, industry, and research.

Her community engagement through Ohio State University Extension reflects her dedication to applying scientific knowledge for the public good.
