Sensitivity & Cultural Intelligence Virtual Workshop · October 21 & 22, 2021

We all know about IQ, intelligence quotient, to assess human intelligence. It’s common to hear about IQ when discussing some of the greatest minds, creators, inventors, scientists, and artists in history; it’s estimated that Albert Einstein's and Leonardo da Vinci’s IQs reached 190. However, predictors of career success are more than a number on an IQ test.

In the last few years, we’ve talked more about Emotional Intelligence (EQ) and its impact on success in the workplace. EQ is your ability to identify and manage your emotions and the emotions of others. Now enter Cultural Intelligence (CQ) as another essential skill in today’s workplace. Cultural EQ is the ability to work effectively in diverse cultural environments.

We’re increasingly aware of diversity of all kinds—ethnicity, geography, politics, generations, beliefs, socioeconomic, priorities, experiences, personal & lifestyle choices, and even industry sectors. In our increasingly global world, it’s not uncommon to see different cultures, ideologies and ways of life create division and tension at work. As part of the workforce, you are continually exposed to new people and new ideas that challenge your perspective and way of thinking. These delicate encounters can be difficult, especially when it feels personal.

Sensitivity development, an important segment of CQ, is aimed at making people aware of their own biases, plus more sensitive to others’ beliefs and the impact on dynamics of group interaction. “Sensitivity and cultural intelligence from a 1,000 ft. view are to make sense of unfamiliar contexts and then blend in, of which each part requires cognitive, physical, and motivational skills,” shared Myron McClure, Respect and Inclusivity Consultant. These are two essential parts of respecting the point of view and story of others. “When we approach these uncomfortable conversations with open-mindedness and a desire to listen, we develop richer relationships and stronger teams,” added McClure.

How’s your cultural EQ? Join Mr. McClure as he facilitates the interactive virtual workshop, Sensitivity & Cultural Intelligence on October 21 & 22, 2021. This two-part e-workshop hosted by AgCareers.com is for those eager to learn about these topics and to create a safe space for conversation about cultural topics in agriculture.
