The Illinois Department of Agriculture announces that Kristi Jones will serve as Assistant Director, strengthening leadership within the agency that supports agriculture across the state. Jones currently serves as Deputy Director and continues her work in guiding agriculture programs that benefit farmers and rural communities.
Jones brings broad experience from many roles within the Illinois Department of Agriculture. She previously served as Communications Director, Division Manager of Food Safety and Animal Protection, Division Manager of Natural Resources, and Assistant State Fair Manager. These positions allow her to build a strong understanding of agriculture policy, public outreach, food safety, and natural resource management.
Throughout her service, Jones is a strong advocate for agriculture. She works closely with agricultural stakeholders and the General Assembly to help build a field veterinarian network across the state. This effort supports animal health and strengthens farm operations.
She also helps invest in underserved farmers and local food infrastructure, ensuring more communities can take part in Illinois agriculture. In addition, she helps share the story of Illinois agriculture by promoting state products in domestic and international markets.
Earlier in her career, Jones spent four years as a Management Consultant with Kerber, Eck, and Braeckel. Her work focuses on implementing the federal Workforce Innovation and Opportunity Act in Illinois. This role helps her gain valuable experience in workforce programs that support job growth, including agriculture careers.
Jones begins her public service career in Illinois as a James H. Dunn Fellow. She later serves as a legislative aide to the Governor’s Deputy Chief of Staff of Legislative Affairs. These roles help her gain insight into state government operations and policy development.
Her education supports her leadership path. Jones earned a Bachelor of Science in Agricultural Communications and Advertising from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. She also completed a Master of Public Administration from the University of Illinois in Springfield.
As Assistant Director, Jones continues to focus on supporting farmers, strengthening food safety programs, and advancing Illinois agriculture through steady leadership and long-term planning.
