Dr. Justin Scheiner earns national recognition for supporting the Texas wine industry through outreach, sustainable solutions, and science-based practices that help vineyards grow successfully and sustainably.

Dr. Justin Scheiner, a viticulture specialist with Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service, is making a big difference in the wine industry. He recently received the ASEV Extension Distinction Award, one of the highest honors in grape and wine science, for helping turn research into real results across Texas.

This award celebrates experts who help growers apply scientific discoveries in practical ways. Scheiner has led statewide programs that support grape growers through workshops and hands-on training, covering topics such as disease control, canopy management, and irrigation.

“It’s a great honor to be recognized by your peers in such a prominent scientific organization,” Scheiner said. “Our program is focused on helping propel the industry forward, and I have a role in that statewide, wholistic approach. I may have received the award, but it recognizes the collective excellence of our program.”

Texas ranks among the top five wine-producing states in the U.S. With over $24 billion in economic impact, the wine industry is growing rapidly. Scheiner’s work helps support growth by improving vineyard practices, encouraging sustainability, and connecting science with real-world needs.

“Dr. Scheiner’s work exemplifies the department’s mission to translate science for practical and sustainable scientific solutions that strengthen the horticulture industry and improves lives,” said Amit Dhingra, Ph.D., head of the Department of Horticultural Sciences.

Scheiner credits the success to a strong team of specialists, researchers, and students who work together to improve vineyard performance across Texas. He believes that teamwork is key to helping the industry move forward.

“Connecting growers with science-based solutions is the heart of our land-grant mission,” he said.

He will also be honored at the ASEV Eastern Section Conference in July, where he will receive the 2025 Distinguished Service Award for his nationwide leadership in viticulture science.
